What do you have?
I've rarely had a Rule submersible pump fail on me.
But it really depends 0n where the pump is located. Sometimes a pump needs to be located away from the pick up and in that case a diaphragm pump is useful.
Jabsco/Par, Rule and Whale all make reliable pumps, so I guess you should choose your pump to suit your needs.

My experience with bilge pump is the cable joint corrosion. Pump cables are usually not very long hence joint almost always are made in bilge area. So have a well made joint and waterproofing goes a long way.

A good place to start is the review section on the wm site. My boat came with a dead Rule pump. Sure enough, that particular Rule had universal bad reviews. I am not happy with the current Attwood pump as it is designed to leak at the output to "prevent air lock " which unnecessary lowers output as the uphill run of the discharge hose prevents airlock anyway. My plan is to find a pump with a traditional water tight seal after checking the wm reviews. Whale and rule will be at the top of the list.

Assuming you already checked for debris blocking the intake and any possible new kinks or obstructions in the discharge hose, and it really is kaput. I'm curious how old is the pump and what brand?
I installed a new Rule bilge pump and separate float switch in 2007 and both are still doing fine, so I would definitely recommend Rule.
