Rejuvenate my Force 10 range

My 1995 Beneteau Moorings 405 came with a 2 burner gimballed Force 10 range, with oven and broiler. It works pretty well, except for a few little things. Both the burners are a little too hot -- it's hard not to burn the rice. I'm going to try a flame diffuser for this problem. After using the oven, I discovered the thermometer was not registering correctly, so I got one to put inside the oven. Once the oven is preheated, I turn the flame down. I can keep it at 450 degrees okay, but when I reduce the flame just a little bit, it drops down to 300 degrees. Most things I want to bake need the 350-400 range, which is exactly the one I can't hold. If I turn up the flame, I burn the bottoms of things. I put some tiles in the oven and this helps a little, but the oven is very small, and I can't find a baking stone that will fit. Any suggestions? I'm wondering if the oven insulation needs to be improved. Also, the only time I used the broiler, the flame went out and would not stay lit. Is there anything I should know? The starter seems to be long gone, so I just use a butane fire starter. What can I do to rejuvenate my stove?

Thermocouples

On the Force 10 stove/oven we have, you have to hold the knob in for 20 seconds while the thermocouple on the side of the burner warms up, otherwise the flame will go out (a safety precaution to ensure that propane is burned and does not leak out if the flame goes out). However, the knob may not go all the way in to activate the thermocouple, due to the knob hitting the backplate when you hold the knob in. So, pull the broiler knob off and put some small pieces of paper (paper towel or tissue) inside of the knob, in the mounting hole. Keep trying this (add more paper) as it can take a couple tries to get enough distance off the backplate. This easy hint was listed on one of the Force 10 tech support web pages dealing with thermocouple issues, and it worked for us. The starter (spark igniter) is powered by an AA battery mounted on the bottom of the stove. Get down on the cabin sole and rotate the oven, so you can see the bottom of the oven, and replace the battery.
