Reinforcing Material Ideas

When installing or repositioning cleats, cam-cleats, etc., through fiberglass combings, what material do you use as backing plates for reinforcement? Aluminum, maybe? I'm replacing the mainsheet cam-cleat on my old O'Day 23 and want to make sure I do it right! I've noticed that where I do have reinforcement, it's usually some sort of composite wood material, which I'm not real comfortable with. I may end up replacing all the backing plates I can get to! Thanks in advance for your insight!

aluminum or stainless

I would use aluminum plates as a first choice where they are hidden, and oversize stainless washers as an alternate choice, or where they will be noticeable. Hunter imbeds aluminum plates into the deck, but I have no idea what O'Day used.

Aluminum is OK If...

You electricaly isolate the stainless mounting bolts from the aluminum backing plate. Otherwise corrosion from different metals may occur. Use an isolating compound on the mounting bolts and backing plate holes. Don
