Reefing Setup

You'd think that after owning a boat for four years, I would've figured out how to reef the main on my Catalina 27, but I haven't. My previous boat had a hook for the forward cringle, and a line through the aft cringle. This boat does not have a reefing hook, and there are are cheek blocks with beckets on the fore and aft ends of the boom. Also on the boom is a jam cleat for the outhaul and a horned cleat that is unused. Is this a common setup for the 27? Or is do people add a hook to the forward end of the boom? Thanks, Bob

you can set it up anyway you like......

Here's a source for catalina 27 owner's manual if you haven't found one yet. http://www.catalina27.org/ re: reefing systems... On my C27 I bought a reefing horn because my new mainsail came with a captive strap, with sewn in rings, strung through the forward reef cringle . This allowed me to easily hook over the lower folds of the sail to the reef horn. Before that I hooked the cunningham to the forward cringle to hold the tack down. The leech cringle reef line runs from the end of the boom up through the cringle, back down to the cheek block then guided forward along the boom through a few eyestraps to the horn/jam cleat near the mast end of the boom. If you look at that cleat closely you'll notice that one of the horns is designed to allow you to jam the 5/16 or 3/8 inch reef line so you can secure it quickly. The cleat also has a hole in its midsection that let's you run the line through it for security. On my boat, both cheek blocks are on the aft end of the boom, one is for the reef line, the other is for the topping lift. The topping lift cheek block has a jam/horn cleat adjacent. Note that the horn cleats are mounted at an slight angle. I no longer use the topping lift because I installed a rigid vang years ago. Many sailors rig other types of reefing systems.... look through the Harken and ronstan manuals for some ideas. Here's a sample or what you can find by a simple goolge search for "reefing systems" http://www.harken.com/rigtips/reefing.php good luck
