I need to tape up some areas of my boat for other work. The tape will remain on for a couple of weeks. I don't want the tape to leave a mark on the fiberglass and it needs to be able to withstand a good rain or washing from time to time. I was thinking painters tape, the blue stuff. Duct tape is out of the question LOL.

Any recommendations? Thanks

Duct tape IS what. . .

you want. Not the grey stuff, but real duct tape. It is silver and has paper covering the mastic. I cut lengths off the roll and then peel the paper as I apply it. When I had my portlights out I covered the holes and not a drop of water came in. When my boat is left alone for long periods I seal the anchor locker with it. After a few months of hot weather it does tend to be hard to remove. But it will not hurt the gelcoat and does not leave a residue. You will find it at Lowes and Home Depot among others.

Brian,3M is the go to company for durable masking tape. The blue stuff is good for 2-6 weeks depending but there is another in their catalog that they claim is good for months.

Do either of you have a specific brand/model of tape? Ed, I looked at the Lowes and HD website and they do not specify any difference of the duct tape.

You probably want this stuff.

3M 2080 60-day release blue painters tape.

This is deffinitely the tape you want but you must check the part number as 3M makes lots of blue painter's tape but they are not the same.

The painter's tapes are paper. The silver duct tape is foil and much more impervious to the weather. I have had it on the boat through the winter and it still holds and comes off readily. Only hot summer weather makes it difficult to remove.

Not sure why the web sites don't show it. But you will find it on the shelves by the old gray(grey) stuff.

Brain,

What exactly are you doing with the tape? Are you going to be painting or just sealing off holes? If sealing off holes the foil tape is good but I find that Gorilla Tape is very, very tenacious and does not let a drop of water in. I used it when installing my new ports. It can leave behind a residue but it comes right off with Acetone...

For painting I prefer 3M Film / FineLine tape. You get zero bleed unlike the blue or green tapes but you can't leave it on. I have yet to find a multi-day tape that does not bleed paint...

We have some bad weather coming. I was going to recaulk my ports but now with the weather... So I am going to take some plastic painters drop cloths, cut them to size and tape them over the ports, three sided. Gonna leave the bottom open. But sometimes I have to go on a business trip and if I am not here, I don't want the tape unsticking.

I went to HD and got the 3m 2080. That should work for now. But thanks for the other info. I know I will be able to use it sometime. Plus, it is now in the archives.

Thanks again.

If the tape is crepe and not smooth it will bleed paint under the edge.

Brian,

Don't know how well the 3 m tape will hold up to the outside weather, rain snow etc, etc, but what about a roll of shrink wrap tape ???

Hey Peter, well we will find out soon enough. I applied the coverings about 1.5 hours ago. So in a few days, after the all clear for California rain, I will go back down to the boat (if I am here) and see. I'll report back.

Lots of variations on the theme re this question.

For what its worth, I've had good success with White color duct tape "pro grade" (or some designation like that) marketed under the ACE brand at ACE hardware stores. Last winter I had several suspected source-of-leak locations in the bow area (such as all around the anchor roller hardware, the bow cleats, and the sampson post) that I knew required quite a bit of time/effort for hardware removal, repair and re-bedding properly with marine grade caulk. So as an interim solution, I covered all the suspected joints and bolt locations with the above mentioned white duct tape. The adhesive is water-proof and there were no leaks for the rest of the winter rain season. And I was surprised that six months later, when I started to make the permanent repairs, the tape came off OK. The tape's adhesive was still flexible. And the adhesive that did remain on the fiberglass and fittings came off easily by wiping with a rag moistened with acetone and/or lacquer thinner. Lacquer thinner doesn't seem to damage the fiberglass gel-coat that I have noticed. And the white tape actually looks fine on the boat.

The white duct tape can also serve as a temporary sail repair material I would think.

Well the rains came on Monday and with it the wind. Gusts upto 30 were reported at the harbor. I went to the boat Monday evening to check on my tape job and was very very happy to see the tape and coverings were intact. 3M 2080 worked. Thanks.

Unfortunately, a boat with roller furling a few slips up dock from me did not fair as well. The head sail was pulled from the top of the mast and was shredded really bad. Total lost.

what tape ?

Duct tape is definitely the way to go Masking tape is paper. It will fall apart with prolonged use in any kind of weather. The gooey residue masking tape might leave will come off quite easily with lacquer thinner.

Good to hear... :)

I bet they didn't have it furled tightly with a few turns of the sheets around the furled sail. You should always have at least two wraps of the sheets around a roller furled headsail. Goes a long way to preventing this kind of problem.

See the blue 3M blue painters tape stuck to the bottom. That was put on last spring when I masked to touch up the paint on the trailer. That piece got missed. Lazy person that I am I left it there figuring it would eventually fall off, being paper and all. I finally pulled it off a couple of weeks ago when I cut loose some kelp. That tape had been through about 50 sails and still looked like new. When I pulled it of it came off clean as a whistle. Granted there is no direct sunlight hitting it, but I think it held up pretty well.
On the other hand I am still picking the strands left by some duck tape that was used to temporarily tape down a solar panel for 2 months. The duct tape completely disintegrated and left a mess.
I know its a little late but may benefit others and yourself next year. You might want to consider plumbers tape. It is a heavy vinyl tape that is tough as nails. It is used to wrap gas lines.

This sounds like a job for...

Maine the tape test guy! :D

OK Maine, go about your testing of different tapes on fiberglass. Which one has the best holding power and least damage?
