Hi all - I've been rebedding all the deck hardware on my older Catalina 30 and wanted to seek advice on various techniques everyone here uses. I have been using Butyl tape for some stuff. Basically looking at rigging hardware, teak handrails, ports, handrails - really everything bolted down....its one of those ongoing projects. Thanks - Rob

Slow process
With each piece of hardware I take off, I check for rot, and if necesary clean it out and repair it. It there is a core involved, I re-drill the holes to a larger size and refill them with epoxy. Once cured, I drill the hole out to the actual size needed and reinstall the hardware or the upgraded hardware. This seals the hole to prevent rot problems in the future. If I am moving something, I follow the same process.

Counter sink
Rick A has the ultimate solution of drilling out an oversized hole and filling it with epoxy. This prevents any possibility of moisture entering the core and causing rot. Many new boats are built using this technique. This was not true in the past and is still not used on all new boats. Other than that I would suggest a simple counter sink bit for your drill. Before you put the stuff back, first drill out a conical depression at each hole using the special counter sink bit. Then fill the hole with your choice of seal. The space provided by the counter sink acts as a kind of “O” ring that will help seal the hole in your boat. S/V Anodyne

Nothing wrong with butyl either.
There is nothing wrong with butyl tape. If you are looking for a caulking/sealant 101 or Life Caulk are excellent options. Be sure that you do NOT tighten down the hardware until the caulking has cured for about 24 hrs. This allows the caulking to form a gasket and will not squirt out when the final seating of the hardware occurs.
