Has anyone routed their mainsail halyard to the cockpit and how well did it work. Pictures and list of materials would be most appreciated.

I did this on my O'Day 25. I used a mast step halyard plate with block attached, a block tied to the handrail (deck organizer turning block is more commonly used) and a clutch. I would tie my sail to the boom using a half knot with an extra turn. This allowed me to pull the sail up from the cockpit as these knots release fairly easy. It wasn't 100% perfect but it worked most of the time. Can you post some pics of your mast base and cabin top?

Thanks, the 28 is a keel stepped mast so the plate is a no go. Also on the later 28's the traveler was moved to the cabin top so the routing of the sheet is very limited. Was hoping to hear from someone with this specific boat and how they did the project.

I re-routed the main halyard, out-haul and reefing lines on an O'Day 35. You will need a mast block for each line, an organizer (two if you run them on both sides) and a rope clutch for each line. I got everything from Garhauer Marine, a great source. Here are some pictures:

For a keel stepped mast you need a collar.
here is an example.

The collar allows you to attach blocks that are used to turn the lines from coming down the mast towards the cockpit.

You will need to decide where and how you want to run the lines. Once near the cockpit you’ll want to terminate the lines either on cleats, on self-tailing winches or line clutches. What ever you decide be sure you minimize friction. Friction will make it more difficult to trim the halyards or raise/lower the sails.

Some of us old school sailors still find value in handling the lines at the mast.

Here is the link to my project to bring main and spinnaker halyards to the cockpit. A big convenience and safety mod for our cruising on the Great Lakes.
