Re chromed winches

Anyone have any luck or advice re chroming a winch? I have been told that they become slick.

re chrome is only as good as the prep, if properly prepped and done correctly as good as new...if not...then yes they are slick as glass....

Post if you find a re-chromer that charges a makes-sense-to-do cost. One of my cabin top winches is a great working Barient self-tailer. But much of the chrome has worn through exposing the bronze casting underneath. Looks like rust spots all over. Polishing helps for only a short while.

In the San Francisco Bay area, re-chroming cost when I've checked doesn't make sense to me solely for winch beautification reasons. Gone are the days when re-chroming was a common thing for car bumpers and hub caps, etc. Now only serious car or motorcycle restoration specialists or hobbyists have need. Also environmental compliance adds a lot of expense and time for the electroplating company.

Powder coating is another option?

Powder coating is a great idea. Then you can even do them is colors.

I don't know about the chroming part, but we've had the drums sandblasted when they were too slick. They taped off the chrome areas or something and just hit the drums. Maybe you could have that done after re-chroming.
