Re-bedding the Deadlights - H41DS

Both of the large deadlights (in the cabin top over the saloon) have leaked in the past and need to be re-bedded. I have Art Boas' write up on the procedure and I'm ready to buy the needed supplies so I can get it done when we have a stretch of nice days in the forecast. Although Art's write up doesn't mention using 3M VHB tape, I'm going to have some on hand and decide while I'm into it whether to use it or not.

I measured the windows today and, although not exactly rectangular, they're about 33" x 23". That's about 112" of perimeter on each. Would two tubes of Dow 795 be sufficient for each window or do I need to plan for more?

I used about 1.5 tubes per window. Don't forget to put a couple small spacers under it when you stick it back in. That way it won't sag while drying and leave you with an uneven reveal.

Thanks. Did you use the Very High Bonding tape to hold it in place?

Nope. I just used the Dow. Made sure the surface was very clean, including wiping down with solvent

Assume they're similar to the ones on my 356 -- here's my write-up:

I did not use VHB either, just the Dow.

Thanks, karellen. Between your description and photos and those of Art Boas I'm ready to tackle this once the weather and guest schedule allows.

If they were originally set in silicone, you will not have much success removing the residue with any solvent. Instead, mask the area outside the hatch edge. Use a razor blade and a scotch pad to carefully scrape it all off your deck. Then proceed with your preferred sealant and re-installation.
