Raymarine ST6001 Smartpilot issue

I have a 2006 Raymarine C80 Display and ST6001 Smartpilot Controller. I have had an intermittent problem that shows up randomly. The C80 Display, boat compass, and the COG reading via the ST6001 all show the correct heading. But, the "Standby" direction on the ST6001 is way off and seems to be stuck in a range from 59 to 63 degrees. Why would the COG and Standby on the ST6001 be showing different directions? Any help would be appreciated.

I'll take a wild guess. The COG is GPS derived on the C80. Could the Standby course be derived from the fluxgate compass which may be malfunctioning?

Any chance you have a metallic object near the flux gate compass? Cog is likely being determined via gps. If the flux gate has a metal object (or energized wire) nearby it will show a relatively fixed direction.

Thanks to shemandr and twalker H260 for the responses. The "standby" worked fine yesterday but after anchoring out last night, it was acting up this morning. I ran the generator this morning but nothing else changed; nothing different around the fluxgate compass. I am not real familiar with the fluxgate compass. Do you know if that is something that could have an intermittent issue or would it typically be fail or no fail?

You can try disconnecting the Raymarine connectors and putting a dab of Dow Corning DC 4 Electrical Insulating grease on the pins before re assembling. This was recommended to me by Raymarine. However when I had a "mystery" problem with my autopilot, it was the computer that was at fault. I sent it to Raymarine for a price to repair which cost around $125.00, but the actual repair would be $900.00. I ended up buying a "refurbished" unit from Raymarine which solved all issues.

As for the inner workings a fluxgate compass is the same as a "Fluxgate capacitor" to me.

The ohm readings you should see for the Fluxgate Compass are
Bare to Blue ---- 6 to 12ohms
Red to Green ---- 3 to 6ohms
Yellow to Red ---- 3 to 6ohms
Yellow to Green ---- 6 to 12ohms
Red to Bare ---- open circuit
This is from Raymarine. I have an S3 ECU with a 7001+ controller
Raymarine said they are no longer able to service/repair my ECU. I am interested in getting my ECU repaired rather than replace all of the components.
semperavanti how long ago did you have your autopilot repaired by Raymarine?
I do have an extra Fluxgate Compass if that turns out to be the problem on your autopilot.
