I haven't seen any recent posts on this. Any current leads on finding a replacement masthead transducer for my Raymarine ST-50 wind instrument, or in lieu of a total unit replacement, parts/service for it?

If all else fails, I understand that I can use an ST-60 MHU, with an adapter cable, but wind speed cannot be calibrated on the ST-50 and therefore wind speed will always read about 25% high. Anyone have recent experience with this?

they are "rebuildable", I had the one on my Sabre 38 redone by a marine electronics firm in Deltaville, VA. I am not sure what the cost was, as it was part of the survey/purchase.

In lieu of that, the TackTick instruments seem to be more ready for prime time now, and may be more cost effective.

I have ST50 spare parts..

..in my basement. Last year my ST50 boat speed went out. It was the gage though and not the transducer. I looked for one on ebay for some time and found it. I bid on it and it ended up going for $300+. I couldn't see paying that much so I ended up replacing my 4 helm instruments with ST60 ones. I decided to buy the whole package (depth, speed, wind) at the boat show which included transducers. Bought the graphic display separately for my GPS. Since I had a new wind transducer I decided to use that instead of the old one even though it worked ok. Fitting at the top of the mast was same. So now I have some extras. My plan was to put them on ebay. I just never got to it yet. So I have a ST50 depth, wind, and GPS instrument as well as the wind and boat speed transducers. How much do you think this stuff is worth? Maybe I'll get motivated and make some new space on my workbench.

One I know Of...

...in the UK I investigated. It was about $600 however, so it didn't seem to make sense in view of the cost of a whole new ST60+ unit. BTW, the ST60+ masthead transducer hooks right up to the old ST50 with just the removal of a gasket. Cut the ends of the 50 and install new prongs for the head and you're good to go (except for the larger cut out, and new stud locations, and your bloody knuckles, etc).

I'd be very happy to try to make a deal with you on just the wind transducer.....if you're willing to sell them separately. Any idea how old your transducer is, and what kind of condition it is in???

I am a bit confused as to you saying that you can not use the ST60 transducer with the ST-50 head. I have done this many times in the past. It works well and you can calibrate the unit from the ST-50. I have the books for the ST-50 if you need them. I can email them to you...Also keep in mind that you may be able to use a NMEA 2000 or 0183 transducer and a converter to get your wind speed and direction. You do not nessisarally need a Raymarine transducer...PM me if you need more information. I would be happy to help you. I work part time for a Raymarine Dealer...

Yes, I still have a few displays left if anyone is interested. I have wind speed,GPS, and depth indicators. Sold are boat speed and wind speed transducers.

ST60 Wind Transducer R28170 with ST50 Display

How did you calibrate the ST50 dwind display for the ST-60 R28170 masthead transducer? The Raymarine tech support says that cannot be done.

I need to replace my masthead transducer. The R28170 is the only possible replacement that I know of.

Thanks,

Re: ST60 Wind Transducer R28170 with ST50 Display

The ST60 will show 20 percent higher wind speed on an ST50 display. It cannot be clalibrated. The wind angle will be correct and can be calibrated. So 10 kts will show as 12. 20 will show as 24. Just think of it is MPH instead of KPH.

ST60 Masthead Transducer for ST50 Wind Display

Thanks.

That makes about 10 to 1 sources confirming the 20-25% windspeed difference cannot be calibrated out of this combination.

Since the prices for the R28170 transducer (new) are about $300 online, I'd prefer to save my $$ for a TackTick wireless wind system.

My only concern with TackTick was the update cycle. I've been racing on an X-99 with TackTick and it seems to be sluggish - maybe it the dampening, but I'd prefer less than 3 second response time. Any ideas?

I do have an old ST50 masthead transducer that took a lightning strike 15 years ago, along with the wind display. They were both replaced by a comletely by the insurance claim (less deductable of course). That newer transducer quit reporting wind direction correctly (flipping 180% occassionally), then the windvane broke off (sea gull?). I wonder if older transducer can be repaired, or any parts from the broken one salvaged to fix it?

A few years ago I took the masthead sender unit off and rebuilt the direction pointer, and then cleaned the conns and lubed it. still works.

I need a water speed transducer-the travel lift got it's belt over mine when i wasn't looking-can the wire be spliced together do you think?

ST 50 parts

I got rid of the boat speed and wind transducers. I believe you can use a new ST 60 transducer though and it can be spliced in. Check with Raymarine to be sure.

I still have ST50 displays remaining - wind, depth, and GPS.
