You can access current firmware info onscreen through the MFD menu. Current version is 5.16 released in 2012. If your chart is the original 2007, you should purchase new charts if you do any cruising outside your area. Lots have changed in 10 years!

Jack,
The upgrade is relatively straightforward and Raymarine's website will walk you through the process...
Thanks Paul,
I assume some of the units listed in step 2 of the instructions use micro SD cards instead of CF. Format is FAT32 so i'll try my old 512MB card first (format and download new firmware and see if the OEM 2007 C-80 firmware can read it). I'll have to see if the hidden file can be found and copied if I try to b/u the existing 128MB CF to the 512MB CF. Thanks for the heads up Meriachee!

Crud...from the Raymarine website...
Populating a Flash Memory Card (Compact Flash/mSD) with the MFD Software

Note: microSD memory cards used with a/c/e/gS Series MFDs should have a memory capacity of no less than 512MB and no more than 32GB. CompactFlash cards should not exceed 128MB in size. If you are unable to obtain this size of card then you can try a card up to 2GB Max CF card at your own risk as early C and E Classic displays may have issues with CF cards larger than 128MB. In this instance we would recommend contacting your local Raymarine agent for them to perform the update.

Oh yeah, disassemble 2/3 of the boat, and send the unit off to somebody.
Goes a long way towards explaining why people don't upgrade.

Was able to purchase a new Sandisk 128MB compact flash card on EBay. Downloaded the C80 firmware update to desktop on my PC. The Ray instructions are to open & unzip the files on the PC prior to transfering the unzipped files to the Sandisk card. When attempting to unzip the files, it won't open. I get a message that windows 7 can't open the files with a DOB extension. Anyone experience this? If so, what was the solution? I attempted on two different PCs.

Sounds like a corrupt download. Get another copy and try again.

The file extension should be .zip not DOB. Check the file you downloaded for .zip at the end. Also check if you have a win zip installed.

I asked RM on their forum about upgrading. You can go there and read it. Very wishy-washy. If your system works and you can upgrde charts, dont bother. I kept upgrading my iphone 4..now it runs slow, runs out of battery and is a piece of crap. It worked fine before for what i want to do with it. Its called planned obsolesence.

Download from Ray included two files:
Autorun.DOB
C_App_Prod516.pkg

Cant open either files as directed by Ray instructions prior to transferring to Sandisk compact flash card.

Found another alternative update method.
256mb compact flash card with updated Ray files V5.16 available for a very reasonable price on Ebay.
Feed back from previous purchasers indicated that the card functioned as described. Just ordered one instead of spending hours trying to open the Ray files & populate the compact flash card.

Will be interesting to see if the basic C80 firmware can read the 256 card. Let us know please. Also, a .DOB file may be a script file that is left as is. The c80 may look for that file on boot up to determine how to load the new firmware...just a guess. Thx

Completed the C80 software update yesterday.
Downloaded the firmware update V5.16 to my desktop and unzipped. Transferred to a Sandisk 256mb compact flash card.
On one of my earlier posts I noted that I could not open any of the downloaded files with .dob and .pkg on my computer.
You can not open these files as they are designed to update your raymarine product and can not be opened or used on a windows or Apple PC. Simply plug the card into the C80 and power on, follow the Raymarine instructions from there.

Now have to determine how to update to the latest Navionics "gold" chart.

Thanks very much for posting the result. Good to know it read the 256MB card. What year is your c80? So did you not use the ebay 256 card with the prloaded v5.16? I got lost there based on your post #31.

Dan,
I have the ebay card, but I didn't use it. While I was waiting to receive it, I downloaded a free version of WinZip and was able to download and unzip the free Ray Marine update. After unzipping, I transferred the files to a Sandisk 256mb compact flash card. Again, you can not open the .dob or .pkg files on you computer. Installation was quick & easy on the C80. My C80 was manufactured in Dec. '10. My understanding is that update is necessary in order for the C80 to work with the newer charts that have higher card memory/capacity.
Now that the C80 update is completed, I am going to update my Navionics Gold "Gulf Coast" chart of '04 vintage. Seems that Navionics has an update card that is available for about half the cost of a new card software kit. You have to have an OLD Navionics card in order to update. The update package comes with a NEW card; however, you have to have an OLD card to insert in your computer's card reader or usb card reader adaptor to register the Old card before you can open the NEW card and select the territory that you wish to navigate. Once your selections are completed and saved, you actually use the NEW card in your chart plotter. You can save your OLD card that is not overwritten for back up. The cost of the update card is approximately $100. and includes updates for one year. IF you search You Tube for "Navionics Update Card", there are a few videos about the update process. Hope this chart update works as seamlessly as described.

I appreciate the details! I'm hoping that the original firmware in my '07 unit is as accommodating of the 256 or 512 card that I have... want to sell the 128 card?
BTW no issues with the new firmware reading the existing chart card?

Dan, I plan to keep the EBay card for backup & will use the 256 card to store routes etc. Sandisk 128 & 256 cards are readily available on EBay. Be sure to buy a new one in the original package.

Good stuff on being able to keep both cards just in case. I think if you do it online, you end up re-formatting your old card with the Update Card, but if you go into the store you get a new one so you'll get to keep the old one and not overwrite it.
