After a day of sailing in 12-17 knots winds and 4 ft swells I fired up the engine to get into the slip. The over heated lamp and buzzer sounded and would don't stop. The engine had been running fine. Now I don't seem to have any raw water output. The sea cock is not plugged, water flows when open. I checked the impeller it looks fine. What else could cause the water not to flow thru the engine. The strainer is clean and free of obstructions. I do notice that the plastic strainer(between the water pump and sea cock) view port does not have visible water in it. Normally it is clear full to the top. What about air lock? Any advice? Dan Hawaii

spun impeller

Hi Dan: Title says it all. Think you will find impeller has broken free from drive hub. If you find this is true, buy new one and repair the old one using marintex, keep as spare. Good luck red

Impeller can be bad but look good

Dan, I had a similar problem with the 2GM20F on my 87H285. It happened late in the season, when there's a lot of grass in the marina, and I originally suspected a clogged water inlet. But after verfifying that the inlet was clear, and that I had good flow up to but not out of the impeller, I opened it to find a perfectly good-looking impeller. No missing blades, nor was it "spun". So I kept on looking. After a long futile search, I decided to replace the normal-looking impeller with a new one, just to rule it out as a problem. It wasn't until I had the new & old impellers in my hand that I realized what the problem was. The old one had become soft, so soft it just wouldn't push water anymore. As soon as I installed the new one, the problem was solved. BTW, I know it's very popular to keep worn parts as spares, but I don't, especially after learning this lesson from the soft, worn impeller. I carry new parts as my spares. Eric Lorgus s/v Explorer
