Raw Water Strainer Installation

I am considering adding a raw water strainer to the engine sea water intake. The boat (Oday 322) apparently did not have one when it was built. There are no signs of cooling problems, but I am concerned about the quality of the sea water and what I may be doing to the inside of the cooling system. My question relates to where to mount the strainer. Does the strainer need to be located above or below the waterline? It seems to me that it would need to be below the waterline since I don't believe the water pump is self-priming. The biggest problem is that there isn't a lot of room to put one below the waterline. Any advice would be appreciated.

I Think Below Is Better

...but I have also seen them a bit above. I agree you should install one since I can't tell you how many things have been found in my strainers. Plastic sandwich bags in particular and plastic shopping bags too. Rick D.

water strainer

Mine(Cat 30)is mounted on top of the thru-hull valve with a stright nipple and then a hose out the other side to the pump. Just make sure the run is as short as possible and you can bleed the air out easily.

Twice in the last couple of years ....

while power sailing the intake managed to suck air and in one case [Beneteau 38] when the strainer was located low the prime came back quickly ... in the other case [Lagoon 38] we had to shut the thrucock and fill the strainer to get the pump working again ... I don't think there is a lot to be said for putting the strainer above the waterline. Sucking air while power sailing on the wrong tack is something to keep in mind. Vic "Seven"

Strainer Installation

I like to locate the Sea Strainer just below the water line, arraigned so that the open end of the intake hose (when removed) can be supported above the waterline. It wouldn’t hurt if the engine end (out) could also be supported above w.l. Even more important, tho', is the ability to easily remove & clean the bowl/screen. Gord
