I am considering adding a raw water strainer to the engine sea water intake. The boat (Oday 322) apparently did not have one when it was built. There are no signs of cooling problems, but I am concerned about the quality of the sea water and what I may be doing to the inside of the cooling system. My question relates to where to mount the strainer. Does the strainer need to be located above or below the waterline? It seems to me that it would need to be below the waterline since I don't believe the water pump is self-priming. The biggest problem is that there isn't a lot of room to put one below the waterline.Any advice would be appreciated.
