I am in the process of changing my sea strainer from the little plastic OEM one to a Perko Bronze much larger unit. The original one was threaded directly to the thru hull. This one has to be mounted vertically. I need to add about 10" of new hose. I was looking at Marine rated Buna-N Rubber coolant and Fuel hose through McMaster Carr.

Is there any drawbacks to this type of hose for salt water?

Marine-Rated Buna-N Rubber Coolant and Fuel Hose
  • Use with coolants, fuel, and antifreeze
  • Tube: Buna-N

  • Cover: Neoprene
  • Reinforcement: Nylon screen with a steel wire spiral
  • Temperature Range: -20° to +212° F

  • Vacuum: 30" Hg @ 72° F
  • Color: Black
  • Hose Material Meets: USCG 1942F; SAE J1527, Type A2

For intake lines I prefer wire reinforced hose. Impeller pumps have been known to collapse non-wire hose under restriction so that hose from McMaster should be fine. You might find it cheaper at Defender or Hamilton so it may be worth pricing it online....?

No need to spend $$$ on fuel hose, you just need, as MS said, simple wire reinforced water hose. No diff for salt or fresh.

Thanks, I only need about a foot @ 8.00/ft. I'm adding a couple of bronze elbow to this order to combine the UPS charges.

I bought heavy duty re-enforced hose for my intake last year. I nearly passed out when the cost was about $15/foot. It certainly isn't going to collapse though!
