I have just had the Cat 30 on the hard for 3 months. New bottom, blister repair, etc. I checked the cutlass bearing and there was no play. I put on new zincs. Polished the prop. Everything looks great. Now I have launched and have just noticed a rattle sound coming from the stern. This is after about 10 hrs. on the hour meter. It changes with the rpm of the engine in forward and reverse. What does everyone think? Cutlass bearing? Can it be changed without pulling the boat? What kind of damage is being done? Crane charges are $300 per hour where I live! Help!

Rattle in the drive-train

Ron, Did you have the shaft aligned?? I had a nasty noise that was resolved by having the shaft aligned. I also had a new cutlass bearing fail the first time I put the boat in gear. The neoprene bearing material spun loose from the collar. It required a quick haulout and repair while in the sling. Have a diver check the bearing for you .. Or, go over Yourself !!! Good Luck !!! Could be simple

It may be obvious if you grab a dive mask and take a peek. Them zincs can be pesky beasts and come loose at the most amazing times. Might be the bearing. Could be something on the prop. Could be engine alignment. First try to eliminate the obvious by looking, then pull her out only if you must. $300/hour? My goodness!
