Racor Size Question

Similar to another thread below, I recently replaced the primary fuel/water separator (which was really just a wide spot in the line for the water to drop out without any sort of filer) with a Racor 120 with a 10 micron filter. Now the engine maxes out at 2500 RPMs whereas before the max was closer to 3300-3500. I have a 28 HP Volvo Penta on my 34' Beneteau. At the same time I added the Racor I changed the filter on the engine, but the kept the same size, 2 microns, as before. Is it possibe that my Racor is too small and I should go up a size? I can't seem to find sizing recommendations anywhere except the GPH on the Racor specification chart and the 15 gph on the Racor 120 seems more than adequate.

filter sizes are correct

sometimes the Racors come out of the box with loose material which might have clogged the outlet port but that's unlikely and would have been noticeable. I'd try re-bleeding it incl making sure the last injector in the line doesn't have air which again should be noticeable (particularly at idle) but re-bleeding may cure whatever other problem there is. If all else fails, I'd replace both filters again in case one is bad.

Size matters...

..but what your useing should flow more than enough for your application.I'd too look at bleeding the engine again..also check the fuel lines to ensure there are no kinks or spots that are being sucked flat..check while engine is running,as this would effect fuel flow. Good Luck>>> David

Should be about 35 gals per hour

I just changed the racor using a 2 micron filter which is rated at 35 gals per hour. The engine is a Yanmar 3gm30, also a small filter at the pump.I can get 3000 plus on the tach. I suspect that you have another problem, possibly one injector not up to snuff, air etc. JMHO

Steve when you hear hoof beats look for horses

not zebras. Your engine can consume only about 3-4 gallons per hour a filter that can pass 15 GPH is entirely adequate. Look for some other cause for the low engine rpm.

Double check your work

Double check your work. I agree with Ross a 15 gph filter should be fine. That engine probably doesn't consume more than 1 gph. Did you use the correct filtration size? Using too fine a filter as a primary could cause you problems if your fuel is dirty. Racor marks their filters with a P for primary and S for secondary. It's surprising how fast you can clog a filter with dirty fuel. Do you use an additive when you fill up or top off? What else did you do other than change filters? Was the change in performance sudden or gradual? Retrace your steps and see what you can find that's different than before. You'll most likely find your problem by doing so. Good luck.

more likely a kink in the line.

Steve: I would also suggest that you check out the line to/from the tank/filter. You could have a 2 micron filter as a primary & secondary and still get the flow you need.
