After watching the video, the most obvious mistake I see we made is not putting on life jackets when the wind got stronger. I put life jackets in the cockpit when the wind got over 20 knots, but no one put them on, they were shoved in the locker. The wind went over 30 knots apparent several times on our indicator on the last leg.

Sporty.

More rig tension! Your headstay sag is scary in those conditions.
LESS vang. You had it on hard. Those mini wipeouts when reaching could be solved by twist.
Jib cars back.

Keep your wind on true.

Got to say, watching the guy at 3:23 walking the side deck without a safety line or life jacket kind of made my backside pucker up a bit.

Just had the rig tuned and inspected last week. Everything is set perfect according to the rigger. With no backstay, the head stay is going to sag in 30 knots, I guess. And I think the wide angle lens distorts the video and makes it look worse than it is.
Wish I could set to true wind, my Raymarine will only calculate and display true from the paddlewheel speed, not GPS SOG, and my paddle wheel is toast.
Yes more twist, about impossible to loosen the vang in those conditions, working on that. Jib cars, forgot to adjust when conditions changed.

Thanks for the advice!

Bill,

I know its harder with a B&R rig, but fractional boats really benefit from having the rig tuned to the expected range of wind. We have 4 bands, and we adjust the rig tune every time we go out. There really is no one perfect setting.

Also on fractional boats, vang is so very important. Work hard on getting that set up so it can be played from the cockpit. On our boats the control line is double ended so it come to both sides of the companionway. Off the wind in that breeze you should have someone on it 100% of the time. We call it the 'rip cord', because a big vang ease will spill big air off the main and bail you out of a jam.

Looks like you guys had fun!

You might like the race 5 video, more boats. At 2:55 we almost hit a C&C, my bad, trying to give room to a J 105 to windward, I didn't see the other boat to leeward.
We had a caught a lift and beat a huge chunk of the fleet to the first mark, so we got in a crowd on the downwind.
