Quick Question about Masthead Light

During the summer I night sail a lot to beat this Texas heat. Yes it's legal to night sail without a masthead/anchor/all around 360 deg. while under sail in a h23, but Texas law says every boat shall display a 360 deg. light while underway at night. Power or sail. I have been stopped at night 3 times and have not been cited as USCG law/rules supersede Texas law/rules. This always took 30 minutes and showing my copy of USCG law to them and having them board my boat and look for further infractions. I did add an anchor light and burn it underway now just to stop the hassle from Texas lake law enforcement. I have not been stopped/boarded since. I added the anchor light 3 years ago.

Was that on Texas inland lakes not connected to the "Sea" (which would be the Gulf)? If so, then COLREGS do not apply and TX regs would prevail. If they're trying to enforce that on Federal waters, somebody needs a stern talking to. A "Republic of Texas" thing maybe?

Regulations or not, you should always sail in a safe manner and consider other boaters by displaying correct lights. Being seen is key. Letting other boaters know if your anchored or "steaming" is paramount to everyone's safety.
