Hey Everyone! Do any of you out there know about a quick way to remove pinstriping? I am currently using one of those eraser things on the end of a drill, and it seems to be doing the trick, but at the rate that I'm going, I will be done after another 11 hours of removal work. Any ideas?

If the stripe is vinyl, a heat gun (industrial hair dryer) will soften up the old vinyl and allow you to peel it off. Additionally if you first prime the stripe with a little "Goof Off" it will loosen the glue underneath.

I watched a boat graphics guy do the job on a power-boat in about 10 minutes with a heat gun last week. Note he held the heat gun well clear of the gelcoat, no doubt to prevent scorching.

A regular hair dryer will work. Not as fast as the heat gun, but no danger of burning anything.

Use a stiff plastic scraper so you won't gouge the gel coat with the corners of a metal scraper. Watch for bubbling in the stripe material. Your fingers might be a warning of too much heat if you hold close to the air of the heat gun.

Note: I am surprised that no one suggested a saws all! Oh, I just did!

Hire your niece and her boyfriend to do it. Give them loads of paint thinner, scrapers, rags and gloves. Leave them alone for a week. Return to de-striped boat and ask no questions.

No such thing as quick. All methods indicated help but it is even worse if striping is old and cracked. Beer helps! Chief

Not sure why you are having problems with the eraser. It didn't take me long at all to remove 3 cove stripes per side on my 30 footer. Once you get the correct angle and speed it comes off pretty quick. Especially after the eraser gets warmed up and heats up the glue.

A hair dryer should work just fine. A heat gun may be just a bit too hot. Just start at one end of the stripe and peel back as it warms up. It helps if the sun can get at the stripe to give a little preheating action. I have had them peel off as if they were coming off a new roll of tape.

WD40 often works well on adhesive residue.

Assuming it's vinyl, loosen it with a heat gun held well away from the gel coat, and peel it up with a plastic scraper. Clean off the sticky residue with MEK (methyl ethyl keytone). It's kind of like acetone but doesn't evaporate as quickly.

If you ever run across a painted pin stripe use easy off oven cleaner.

Ha ha.... oven cleaner is essentially lye. And chemically speaking that is also what peel away is made from. Nice trick! I should have thought of that.;)
