So i just bought this 84 C27, and one of the things that needs work is the heat exchanger... I guess it leeks, the guy i bought it from said it could be welded. I can handle this, i just need to figure out where it leaks. Now to be honest with you i really have no idea what this heat exchanger does, and i would like to know b4 i try to fix it... so what does it do ? should i just take it off and then try and fix it, or should i run the motor... if i should run the motor how would i go about hooking a water supply to it... Would a 5 gallon bucket work with a garden hose to the inlet ? where is the inlet? thanks again

C27 M18 Engine and HX

Jim, Congratulations on your new boat and engine. I know how ya feel, 'cuz I had not idea almost 11 years ago.

Here's some help:

1. www.marinedieseldirect.com - You NEED to know this website, and can download the full parts catalog of your engine and identify all the parts.

2. Engine Manual - don't know if you have one, get it from the link above, or try this which describes a series of Universal M-series engines and how they work; it's from our C34 website, we have M25-series up to M35XPB and every other letter they could add to the engine #! :dance:http://www.c34.org/manuals/index.htm The Operator's manual is in two pdfs.

3. Don't ever connect a garden hose to the raw water inlet, ever. Put the rw pump intake hose in a bucket and keep the bucket filled. There have been many discussions here about this, and if you're interested, do a search on "garden hose" & "bucket"!

4. The HX removes the heat from the freshwater cooling system (the anitfreeze): rw inlet seacock, strainer, hose to engine mounted rw pump (NOT on the pulley, most likely),rw pump to HX, HX to exhaust riser to muffler, overboard discharge. The fw system also heats your domestic hw if you have a water heater on the boat.

5. Source for HX stuff in the photos. Sendure is now Western (invoice), same phone #.

Welcome to the gang! :D

Ok, that is what i thought it was.. it's like the radiator in my car with the raw water acting as the air, that is easy enough.. i have 3 books on the motor that came with the boat i think 1 is repair and the other 2 are regarding parts. so I'm set there. Even tho I'm very mechanically incline, I have no idea how everything works on this boat, but i guess thats what it's all about... thanks for your help

o yea, does this trans ever need to have it's fluids changed or anything like that? if so i should do that it has been on the hard for 3 years..

Thanks again

Jim,
Congratulations on the new boat. I too just purchased an 84 C27 with an M18 and I too had a leaky HX. I just completed the project of installing a new one, my old one was beyond repair. While completing the install, I also added a vented loop in the raw water line from the HX to the exhaust. As I understand it, this will prevent water from siphoning up into the exhaust when the motor is not running and ending up inside the motor. I purchased a new HX, hoses, clamps and a stainless vent for $500 and did the install myself. I found that removing the screws in the starboard side access panel and moving it out of the way made access to the HX much easier than working over the hatch door. Before you undo any hoses, make sure you drain the fresh water side (antifreeze). There is a drain valve on the starboard side of the motor, I ran 2' of clear hose out toward the front of the motor and drained the coolant into a container. If the boat is in the water, make sure you close the sea cock for the raw side before removing any hoses on that side. When you do your reinstall, make sure you run the engine for 1/2 hr or so with the cap off the fresh water side to burp it, advice given to me by the yard. This will prevent an air bubble which could cause overheat and engine damage. The mechanic told me that if drafting off of a bucket, to remove the hose from the sea strainer outlet and put that in the bucket, not the hose attached to the seacock/ strainer inlet. I had to prime the raw water pump and it took some doing to get it to suck water while the boat was on land. Once in the water and hydrostatic pressure was enough to let the pump do its thing. I just brought my boat home yesterday under power and ran the motor for 2 1/2 hrs, she ran at between 130 and 140 degrees f. I also used some old bike tire tube between the HX and mount to prevent the finish from getting damaged from vibration. Good luck on the project!
Jeff

jlenox, thanks man, for all the info... Mine looks a bit cleaner than your old one did, but it has been in fresh water all it's life. I really really hope i don't have to buy a new one right now. The motor has less that 300 hrs on it, so I'm hoping not much goes wrong with her... But that's not my luck
