When I poked my head down in the lazarett, I found a message on the inside transom that read; "Checked by Fred."Keith, Rich, Rick, et. al:

Besides Ed K, How do we know you are even you? There are no pictures of your boat, or albums or anything. You could be a girl, or a terrorist trying to infiltrate america's civilian navy or maybe worse.Keith, Rich, Rick, et. al:

Joe,Ed,
I thought that you were joking when you mentioned the coin by the builders, so I went along with it and made up the story about seeing the name under the lazarett hatch on transom. I'll have to start looking a little harder. Who knows, maybe I'll find something in my boat that I never knew was there.

I've found a few loose pennies while working on the boat; probably from the former owner.Keith, Rich, Rick, et. al:

Ok, maybe Ed K really does have a sailboat. He seems to know what he is talking about, but these days of terrorism and upheaval, you just can't be too careful! He might have even been a guy who just has a WAVERUNNERJoe,
The coin is a very old ship building tradition. That is if a boat building plant has any old time boat builders.
Since O'Day used three plants, the question is did all three places follow tradition?
Anyway, is there anybody else out there familiar with the tradition? Has anyone else found a coin on their boat?![]()
I would suspect that the bigger boats are more likely to have followed tradition and plants that had a core of experienced boat builders with boat building traditons.![]()
Too bad Keith does not respect boat building traditons, until this gregious lapse of judgement he was doing fine.ix:

You know Captain Herring...well that is pretty good. But I have read all the horatio hornblower series, and some of the Jack Aubry series, and all of "Patrick O'Brians Navy"Keith,
If you learn how to search the archives, you will find some pictures. Your lack of computer skills is not my issue.![]()
My boat has a nickel. I suspect your boat has one also. But after your childish response I will let someone else tell you where to look. You have a compelling need to learn something about the guys who made your boat.
The guys who made your boats had some historical traditions. When a big building has reached it top, have you seen a tree branch on top. You have to learn traditions. You need to learn history.
I happen to be and have been on several sailboat elist. In fact I know a personal friend of our host, Captain Herring. Imagine that!
But I will not be baited by a "Liberal". :naughty: If you are interested, I will tell you of a few email Blogs and forums for Americans.~~~~~~ _/) ~~~~~~

Rad,OK,
I had the mast off the boat and didn't find the coin but..... it could be under the aluminum mast step plate and I have not had that off but I did find scrap rolls of #8 bonding wire under the water tank area in a large void by the hull in addition to all the garbage left behind by all that have worked on the boat.
Now I have been in every nook and cranny on Free Spirit and have never seen a coin except the one place that that it should be in but then again if someone was hording copper wire one has to wonder if they would leave a coin behind.
Keith here is your O'Day nickel:Hmm..... very interesting
Hi Ed,Joe,
Ask your buddy Rudy if he ever heard of the tradition...:bang:

Coin found on O'Day 26:When I gutted our boat I found a lot of change. Just under $1.00 in various denominations. Is that nickel attached? If not, I would not have known if it was put there on purpose or if it was from the PO. BTW, I finally got to my boat to check it today. I haven't been there in two weeksAfter many inches of rain, it was bone dry inside. All that work on the hull deck joint this spring paid off:dance:
