so i'm looking at the noaa chart around queen mary, am i reading it right? some of the water depth is only 3 or 5 feet? see circled number of attached pic.

well, I'm planning to go thru that channel to get to one of the the marinas in there. I guess I'd better stay way to the other side.Nor is the QM planning to go anywhere...And isn't that shallow water further INland?
The Queen Mary retired to her present location in 1967. The water in today's charts show low tide depths of 30+ feet. She would have come in from the EAST - the deep water side of your map. The Queen Mary's draft is 39 feet. She is now contained within her own protected "pond".
I suspect that the water depth was quite adequate when she was brought to the site at high tide and with the Queen Mary lightened without passengers and large loads of fuel.

You can't get that close anyway without the CG chasing you off. The water can be that shallow further up stream. There is a trench that the Catalina Express uses on the other side of the river. The water is also deeper along the west bank going up to the landing. The center is pretty shallow. I tried to cross it my first time to get over to the Catalina Express trench but got stuck in mud half way. Fortunately the Mac 25 has a retractable keel so getting unstuck was easy. The water is so nasty there even in two feet of water you can't see bottom.

Correct, and I think there are some areas silted up even worse since those soundings. Whenever I see some sails full but stationary, I know what's happened. yes, the channel is marked. Stay to the northern side of the marked channel and all will be good. BTW, good for you for checking!
That explains why all the channel markers are way over to the other side. I was just there a few weeks ago, and it is indeed very well marked.
