I am nearly finished prepping my catalina 22 for paint all Over the hill and the deck. I live in eastern Pennsylvania and it has been over 50° during the day but dips below 50° in the evening. Is it OK if I apply paint during the day when it is well above 50° even though it will go below 50° at night?

Check the side of he can.. Different paints dry at different rates. In some cases the the boat needs to be " up to temperature ". Just cuz the air is 60 doesn't mean the boat is.

The boat will be slow to warm, even if the air temp is high. If you have IR thermometer, measure the temperature of the boat. It will need to remain above the recommended temperature for the whole curing time.

Those forehead thermometer strips might be a good way to measure hull temp if you don't have an IR thermometer gun.

Wait. The results will be better. The sunny spots might be warm, but the shady side is not.

I have restored 7 old project boats so I think I've done all the boat painting I want to do. With that said..I made this mistake once. Got something called "orange peel". The paint dries at different rates and pulls in on itself and makes a surface that looks like an "orange peel". I had to sand off a big piece of the starboard back panel and start over. Wait until you have a night that does not drop below 60. Another good tip is to pick a day with almost no breeze (dust pollen etc)... don't park in the shade of a tree (I had ants falling out of the tree onto my boat) and if you have issues with gnats etc. light about four citronella candles and place them around the boat about an hour before you start. There is almost nothing more frustrating than getting a near perfect finish only to come back the next day and find a gnat or ant stuck in your paint.

Read up on roll and tip techniques for a near mirror finish.

Assuming your C-22 is on a trailer and you have the space, consider parking with the bow pointing due South. My boat points close to that and I use the sun for all brushing.

Once temps are in coating range, I'll start on the east side which stays in the shade until about 10 - 11 am, due to a hill to the east. I'll wrap that side up whether painting the topsides, varnishing toe rail or house on that side, even the bottom paint.

Then I'll move to the starboard side as the sun starts to warm the side I just painted. I'll finish my work on the shaded side, just as the sun breaks around the bow.

As suggested look at the information on the can. some will and some not but drying time will be longer. If boat is going onto trailer, suggest a temporary plastic liner over carpet bunk boards so carpet on bunk boards will not dig into the paint

If you are using an Interlux paint, Interlux has an excellent 800 number to call for product use advice, I have spoken with them a number of times over the years and always gotten good advice from people who really know the product.
