Question about AC wiring

I need to move my Inverter/charger with transfer switch. The existing 120V AC 10-3 won't reach the new location. Do I need to run 2 new homeruns from the panel to the inverter or can I use a junction box with terminal blocks to extend the run?

Well, 2 homers will certainly give you an edge over the Bosox. ;) Gotta love auto correct.

It is always better to reduce the number of connections being made as it reduces the opportunity for corrosion to form. If this was my boat, I would install new wire. However, good butt joint connections could be made if heat shrink connectors are used and properly crimped.

That pretty boat you use in your Avatar deserves the best.

You can use a terminal block with a cover, and ring connections on the wire ends, but you need to be sure it is not hidden from easy access.

It is one more thing to check on your annual inspection for possible corrosion, as @dlochner identifies.

The box would not be hidden, it would be in the battery compartment. I will spend the 20 bucks and run new wires. I was just wondering in case I have trouble snaking new wires from the panel to the inverter and back. Thanks for the replies.

Before pulling the old wires out, attach a line to the wire and pull the line through the passages. When it is time to snake the new wire, reverse the process. Mason's line works well for this purpose.

They make thin flexible fiberglass rods they can be connected together. They work great in those tight places to assist a wire through to the place you want it. Also handy are electrician wire fish tapes that can assist in the project.

You’ll discover new voids you never knew existed in working this project. Perhaps you’ll also discover a boat treasure.

Treasure, I wish. The last time I did something like this, I discovered a keel bolt that needs to be replaced. Usually it's just a moldy rag or rust encrusted screwdriver.

I think you will find that a new 10-3 run is cheaper than a smaller run, junction box, connectors, grommets, screws..... and less likely to corrode

Treasure is sometimes hidden in the simplest things. Finding a problem keel bolt that otherwise was hidden - that it was a problem, from one perspective is a treasure.
