I installed a PSS seal this winter and am launching in the next few days. It's been adjusted to the suggested 3/4" compression and I will give it a final alcohol wipe down before launch. How much water should I expect to see when I splash? If I see more than whats expected, I assume I should add more compression or go through the break in procedure (AKA motor around for an hour)?

When I launched there was no water. If you followed the recommended instructions you should see no water. If you do see water increase the compression. If after use you begin to see water I believe they suggest running a cloth between the graphite and the steel surface to remove any contamination. Running the prop helps to polish the surface

On average, the PSS requires approximately one (1) hour of break in time, which allows the carbon ring face to polish the mating face of the stainless steel rotor. During the break in period you will experience a very fine mist, sometimes associated with a black dust coming from the PSS. Under normal conditions, this will stop after an average of one (1) hour running time. After the break-in period clean up any black dust deposits. If the black dust returns after the break-in period, visually inspect the seal for signs of miss-alignment, or excessive wear.

What John has just detailed perfectly is 100% what you should see and not see. I just installed a new PSS system on my Hunter 340 last month. I have only had a 30 minute +/- run and have no water. I can share some before and after photos of the finished project as a reference. I replaced my seal after 8 years because I saw some signs of the bellows drying out and didn’t trust it going forward.
I have the PSS with the Silicone bellows now. It states a 10+ year life span.
First 3 are the before….

Tell us how the experience was. If you see a lot of water stay in the slings. If is does not stop after you try to increase the compression, have them haul you out and appraise the situation a shore.
