Put Away Routines and Favorite Drinks

What is your put away routine when you come into your slip, secure your lines and turn off the motor? I notice for us it is almost always the same... and that includes handing up a cold Pacifico and shaking a Margarita. I have been working on the perfect Margarita for a while now, and think I have landed on the best and the easiest......

Perfect scratch Margarita
Shaker glass full of ice
1 shot Silver Tequila
1/2 shot Agave Nectar (put this in shot glass first, add the lime and stir together with your finger. Otherwise the nectar is too thick to mix well)
1/2(+ a tad) shot lime juice
Shake to mix all, pour into SO personalized Lexan rocks glass
… Float a little Grand Marnier if you're celebrating!

The boat is either rinsed thoroughly or washed if dirty by the beer drinker, and I with my trusty purple Absorber begin working my way around to hit every surface I can reach! And of course I put on music.. Current new favorite, Derek Truck and Susan Tedeschi, Midnight in Harlem.

My favorite drink right now is a Margarita made this way-

Suaza Refreshing Margarita
1 large can limeade frozen cocentrate, thawed
1 large can Suaza Agave Silver Tequilla
1 large can water
1 can light beer (my fav is Bud Lite with Lime)

Mix all together in a pitcher. Serve over ice. Yummmm....

My other favorite (and my dock neighbors favorite) is an Amerratto Kiss
2 oz vodka
1 oz cranberry juice
1/2 oz ameratto
splash of orange juice
Place in cocktail shaker with 8 ice cubes. Shake, strain into sugar rimmed glass.

I like a little latin, middle east or some good old R&B on the stereo.

Luz:

Try a little Controy (get it in TJ) vs the Grand Marnier. It is the Mexican equivalant of Contreau (cheap south of the border). Then add a splash of orange juice. Have a bottle of simple sugar around for those who prefer a little sweeter flavor.

All-n-all I think you are on to something!

Our newest summer beverage is watermelon mojitos.

I do margaritas like POTL, except we call it grog. Use the Limeade can for measuring out other ingred, except the beer. But the watermelon mojitos sound pretty good, what's the recipe for those Steve?

Darn you guys found the "secret" recipee for margs. Limeade is THE best mix for margaritas and the perfect mix is 1 can Limeade to 1 can of water. Darn you guys are good it took me years of trial and error to come to that... I too prefer silver tequila...

Sour mix should be banned from margaritas. It's like 5200 you should need a note from your mother to even buy it.. Pure junk....

The basic:

Fill margarita glass to rim with ice
2 shots tequila
1 shot triple sec
Top up with mix

Tune it up with top shelf tequila and a top shelf triple sec like Cointreau or Grand Marnier

We call ours the "Poor Man's Margaritas" - limeade (yeah!), TQ, and salted rim, your choice of ice types.

Also like rum & OJ, dark rum from Trader Joe's, $9.99 a bottle, Whaler's Dark.

is no one using Agave Nectar?? For me, it is the perfect companion to pure wonderful lime juice. If you have not tried it, you should. Oh yeah, and thumbs up on the salt on the rim.....except I forget so often so I end up putting a pinch into the drink!

Ditto on the OJ and dark rum..... a friend has perfected the mai tai to be warm and satiny, not stark pure rum ( I know, that sounds great to some of you but too much for me!) Dark rum and just enough OJ to make it velvety looking.

Steve-I gotta have the recipe for the watermelon mojito!!! Maine Sail I am going to try a little Grand Marnier-my God that sounds good. I usually just drink it neat but in a margarita? Has to be awesome.
Here is something else I learned about rimming (ooh, that sounds bad doesn't it?)-rub the glass with lime and then rub a jalepeno pepper over that and then plunge it into salt. Makes my knees weak just thinking about it....:dance:

Embarrassed to say ...

I like Malibu Rum and Coke, Sue likes Baybreeze (with Malibu Rum). That keeps it simple for us. I think I am going to try a few of those margarita recipes this weekend for a pool side party! Finally, upper 90's around here ... good for the pool and margaritas!

Wow Princess, love the Jalapeno rub on the rim, then salt, mmmmm.
also, love the idea of honey then salt ......and will try that with the agave nectar, same consistency as honey without the strong honey flavor. What a lot of great suggestions. Yes, Steve, give us the Watermelon Mojito recipe.
The Grog recipe is one a friend introduced us to.....wonderful for a crowd, and a poor crowd for sure!!! I love the add in of the beer, it taste really good.

Anyone drink Bloody Marys? If you don't already know about Absolut Peppar vodka, you need to look for it. It is a pepper vodka and is great. I don't know the full recipe of the mix that we love at our local breakfast house but it includes horseradish and lots of lime. Is NOT one of those with a sweet taste to it, more olive juice, lime, pepper flavor. Makes my mouth water describing it.

I’m a big fan of “Pyrat” Rum, good sipping, just plain on the rocks. It has a very deep smoky flavor for rum. I’ll also mix up a Captain Morgan and Seven-up. It puts a nice cap on a good day on the boat and it’s a bit more refreshing when it’s hot.

I'm with you except I use Sailor Jerry. Nice and simple!

We have an Anheuser Busch distributor in our group so needless to say we have endless kinds of domestic, imported and craft beers. I get to try all of the limited release and craft brewers test formulas.

Bloody Marys (nice and spicy) on Spam and Egg Sundays and the occasional Sumatran coffee and rum on the cooler evenings.

Oh and we do have a "put away" routine. It consists of tying lines and turning things off or something like that.

Very good!!!! Though I love to get new drink recipes I think the draw toward the drink side of this question was too strong to see the question about what is everyone else's routine once they are into their slip. I see some people squirt a little water at the hull, close things up and they are gone. We have a regular routine and part of that routine just happened to include a drink routine......but the rest of it is a really thorough cleaning each and every time.... so I was just curious.

Cleaning up is not a necessary part of the routing ...

freshwater has advantages, no salt to rinse off ...

almost forgot my favorite beers ... Leinenkugal's honey weiss, summer shandy, or sunset wheat.

I just got up to fetch one now. mmmm refreshing ... now for a jump in the pool.

We have a regular routine and part of that routine just happened to include a drink routine......but the rest of it is a really thorough cleaning each and every time.... so I was just curious.

OK. So after arrival in our slip (bow in) the boat is temporarily secured bow and stern, engine to low RPM for cool down. Change to "At the Dock" playlist. Open beer/mix drink. Put away all navigation/safety/communications equipment. Turn off all equipment used while underway (instruments, autopilot, etc.). Open all hatches/portlights. Open galley drain thru-hull. Close raw water thru-hull. Shut down engine. Plug in shore power. Turn on shore power breakers (at boat and at pedestal). Ensure that main is secure and cover if done sailing for this trip. Ensure that jib is furled tightly and sacrificial strip covers all of the sail. Police up lines. Secure dock lines appropriately. Depending on what the plan is for sailing in the next few days (Are we leaving? Is it someone else's turn to sail tomorrow? What's the weather forecast?) rinse boat. If I'm going out on our boat the next day, I will hold off on the rinse.

That's about it.

And of course I put on music.. Current new favorite, Derek Truck and Susan Tedeschi, Midnight in Harlem.

Jack, thanks for the blow by blow, that was interesting. We have never cooled down our engine, just pull that sucker and take the key out! hmmm??

So, we are the same as far as when the beer/drinks are handed up...... thought so!!!

Glad you listened to Derek and Susan, aren't they amazing. Did I say that so far I have not been able to get through that video without realizing I was crying. I am coming back in my next life playing exquisite guitar. Evidently Derek was somewhat of a child prodigy. We just secured tickets to see them in July and really looking forward to it.
