Just curious.... I am considering a move from ND to FL. Needless to say that is going from a freshwater to a saltwater environment. It has never been in anything other than fresh water. Other than the obvious changing of the bottom paint is there anything else I need to do to her to prepare the boat for salt water?

NORTH DAKOTA TO FLORIDA .... don't worry about the boat's reaction to salt water ...
worry about how to stop it from screaming ... " Thank you, Thank you , oh, daddy, thank you " :)

BTW, hope you ordered it w/ A/C ;)

Can't think of anything. Make sure you have a zinc on your prop shaft. Get use to waxing the stainless as it will rust with the water down here. Need any detailed info on the area send me a private message.

One more thing. Depth is your enemy. So be prepared to adjust your sailing/cruising plans based on the wind and tides. The north wind this past weekend dropped the tide more than an extra foot!

Yeah tide will be something that I will need to keep in mind. No problem with that problem up here. I keep thinking I could get stuck out because I cannot get it..

How quickly does the bottom get fouled in those waters?

Your Draft????/

What is your draft but not to worry lots of big boats here in PG but you will need to be careful skinny water for sure.
You will love it here and think you went to heaven,I moved here from NY and love it here.

Draft is 5' so it should not be a big problem. But you are right it will be "skinny water"

In full salt water, you will need to have the bottom scrubbed about once a month. Of course you will need BOTTOM PAINT. Hard paint like Trinidad works well here and scrubs well but, over the years will build up. It is very difficult to remove. Soft ablative paint wears off and will come off when you scrub the bottom. Does not of course build up over time. Works best if you use the boat often, not real effective if the boat sits still for long periods. Both types have their staunch adherents.

Nick, Sailm8 and I keep our boats in canals off the Peace River. Don't know about Sailgunner. In the winter the water at our docks is about half salt and during the rainy season it is fresh.

SR-40

I use SR-40 when I first came to Florida and my boat was almost 4 years before new bottom job and did not need monthly diver to scrub the bottom.
As bill said my bottom paint is soft and just need to use it often for the slime to remove itself and don;t need a diver monthly.
I did use SR-60 last time and will see how well it does,my draft is 4'10'' and do OK in PG,I do need to clean the prop every 2 months or so

Nodak7,
Bill's comments about hard/ablative paint(s) are well taken.

I used Petit Trinadad for many years. I worked well to inhibit growth, but the "build up" problem became severe. A few years ago, I stripped all the old (hard) paint off. Since then, I have used hard paint (Trinadad SR) on the keel and rudder. I think it's more resistant to fouling than ablative, the hard paint rubs off less easily when you go aground, and any extra build up weight down low isn't really a problem.
I use ablative on the hull, with several coats along the waterline.
Like everyone else, I've tried lots of different things on the prop and shaft. My preference has evolved to using Petit "Zinc Coat Barnacle Barrier". It seems to work (for me) better than anything else. After it dries on the prop and shaft I smear a heavy layer of (generic) Desitin ointment over it.
I know, sounds "mickey mouse", but, the zinc oxide ointment stays on for a few months and very much inhibits all growth, before it finally gets "blown" off motoring. ... It's inexpensive, helps further delay prop/shaft fouling, and I only get laughed at till the boat goes back in the water ...:)

So you use diaper rash medication on your boats underside???

Do you coat your prop with anything? Does the location in the channels make a difference? In other words if I had a house in the back section would that make a difference on bottom cleaning requirements? When you have your bottom redone which yard do you go to? Can you do your own work there? Do you have a lift or keep her floating?

I have VC-17 on right now and the yard (Gasparilla) said that it would never do around here. Which I am certain is the case. It works great here but we have no bottom fouling problem either. They gave me a quote on removing it and, I think, replacing it with Trinidad (I believe).... it was pricey.

Gasparilla is probably the most expensive yard in the area. As far as I know you cannot do your own work there. All American and Charlotte boat storage are both in nearly fresh water, you can work on your own boat at either. Getting there thru the lock will require hi tide and no north wind for 5 feet of draft. You might minimize what Gasparilla does, get your boat in the water and go to either AA or CBS. Lock entrance is up the Myakka river, about 15 miles north of
Gasparilla . Nother 7 or 8 south in fresh ish water to both yards. They are side by side.

Nodak, Just arrived back in frozen Eastern Canada after two weeks of sailing with a friend that lives in Punta Gorda Isles. Following that experience I think both the boat and your body will thank you for the move from the cold to the warmth. Since I know that you travel a goodly distance to get to the boat now it will be a total shock to your system to walk out the back door of your house and 20 seconds later be standing in your cockpit getting ready to cast off.

Yes if it happens it will put a totally different perspective on our sailing. Did you go any place while you were out for the two weeks?

We left Ounta Gorda on the 24 of Jan. travelled to just off Ref Fish Pass on day one, left their the next day for a long day and overnight passage to Marathon. Got held up in Marathon for 7 days due to high winds. Left Marathon on day 8, around 12:00 hrs. did another overnight to Naples. Left Naples for a short hp to Pine Island and then back to Punta Gorda. All and all a good trip, but for someone who is used to having a minimum of 25 feet of water under the keel at any given time and well over 300 feet most of the time the skinny water was an eye opener. BTW the trailer is coming along well and will be ready long before I need it. Thanks again for all your help, pix to follow.

:wow: That is what I would just love to do! LOL... yeah for us less than 13' is getting nerve wracking! Especially since we are used to the 50-100' range. If you watched my video I always pan on the instruments and very rarely is it less than 80'. When we were sailing in Charlotte Harbor I kept an eye on the depth gauge and I think the best I saw was 16'.
