I recently pulled the centerboard on my 1979 Oday 23. It was easier than I thought it would be, once I found a crane to lift the boat. The board seems heavier than I expected. I am wondering if it is waterlogged? Does this board have a plywood core? I plan to dry it out over the winter and repair/refinish it before relaunching in the spring. I noticed the wedges and plates were bedded with something. Any suggestions on what kind of caulk or bedding compound I should use when I reinstall the wedges and pins?

Charles, the hardest part of the whole procedure was finding a way to lift the boat. I used a crane with slings, then eased the keel down onto blocks about 24 inches high. The operator kept tension on the slings while I crawled under the boat and unhooked the shackle that attaches the pendant to the centerboard (I had set the board down about 16 inches so I could access the shackle.) Then I removed the 4 screws that hold the wedges in place and gravity did the rest. The pin and board literally dropped right out. The whole procedure took about 5 minutes. Thinking everything through ahead of time helped. At $150 per hour for the crane you don't want to dilly dally. After I had the boat on the trailer I replaced the pendant. I'll patch up the board over the winter and reinstall in the spring prior to launch. Let me know if you have questions.

Going to do the same on my 222,,.
Hi Kevin, I'm hopping to do exactly the same at haul-out. Glad to read how easy it was for you. My centerboard has a chunk, I call it a bite out of the back upper quarter. Purchased my 222 in late spring so when I went to launch off the trailer the water at the ramp was to shallow. Then I went to extend the tongue on the trailer only to find that previous owner hadn't used the sliding mechanism.. For wanting to get the boat in the water I hired the marina's travel lift. While suspended in the slings and dropping down the centerboard and discovered the bite. Rather than getting excited about the problem I launched anyway and will deal with it this winter. Don't know, but I think they are plywood cored. ?? Mine didn't seem heavy when I manually lifted it and made sure it could move freely. Of course it maybe heavy now with the core being soaked. Plan to keep it near my furnace for two or three months. Also I read there is a ss cable connected to the pendent and the pendent has the rope that feeds up to the cockpit. The new replacement does not use the ss cable,,, Hummmm I would think the cable would create less drag while centerboard is in the lowered position. What is you plan for this situation.??

Did it in a cradle
I was lucky. My boat was out of the water in a cradle when I pulled the centerboard. It took a little finesse and some blocking, but it was doable. The only problem was I replaced the delrin centerboard pin I got from D & R and installed it without verifying the length of the new pin. It was too long and I jammed it into place. It took a lot of work to remove the pin and properly reinstall the centerboard. Haste makes waste. CVP

Fastscot, Thanks for the heads up. I plan to replace my pin and wedges when I reinstall the board in the spring. I will make sure I check the replacement parts to make sure they will fit before I have the crane on the clock! KP

Hi Chuck, Yes, the original centerboard pendant had a short length of stainless steel cable with an eye that the rope was spliced to. I ordered a replacement from Rudy(all rope, no cable) and installed it. In theory it seems like the cable might have less drag. Not sure why DandR Marine changed the design of the replacement pendant, but I decided to trust their judgement. KP

Kevin, It must be that the 23 centerboard is heavier than the 222's.. I notice on my 222 when dropping the CB I cannot feel on the line if the board has reached it maximum down position because the drag on the line takes over. Can't remember when I looked at my CB last spring if mine in fact does have the cable or not. In any event I plan to mark on the new line three different positions of the centerboard so that I can be sure just how far down my board is, or how far up. I wonder, when the short SS cable is used, it's length is determined when the CB is fully up by the distance between the back of the CB and the tube that feeds the rope to the cockpit. Perhaps the full SS cable would saw through the tube over time thus the full rope is used. On the other hand when the CB is fully down and the short SS cable is used, there will still be drag from the exposed rope and therefore probably a mute situation.. Hummm Wonder if this a common design used by other shoal draft centerboard boat Mfgs??
