PSS Shaft Seal

Anybody know what size shaft seal for a Catalina 27 with the atomic 4? Also could anybody that has installed this give me a realistic estimate on how big a job it is (especially with a 29 year old shaft/coupling). Last year I rebuilt my exhaust from the exhaust flange on the engine and I swear being crammed in the port access hatch is worse than anything they are doing to those guys in Guantanamo......and I pay for this. -Matt

One of the things to consider is the

distance you have available. One of the difficulties some of our C34 folks have had with newer engines is that the distance between the back of the transmission and the shaft log may be too short for one of these. Measure twice... Lots of others can chime in on the job, I haven't done it because I prefer the "low tech" stuffing box with the dripless material I've installed, and many of our colleagues have done it. It could well be that some newer boats from Catalina are actually being built with them from the factory. Good luck.

I have been thinking about installing one all winter and decided not to this year. I am going to try dripless packing instead becuase it is much cheaper and easier to install.

I changed one on a Catalina 30

The tough part of the job was separating the prop shaft from the coupling but it can be done. Somewhere there is a procedure written. Hopefully another reader will post. I really like the PPS shaft seal cause you don't need to adjust it. Just check it now and then. I just bought one for my 36 and will be installing it when the weather gets warm (much warmer). Good luck.

I'm in the same boat

Matt, The 2 dimensions they need are the shaft size and the outside diameter of your strut aperature. Don't ask me why it's not the inside diameter, but that was the email inquiry response I got back from the PSS website. Let me know what you find out. I'm willing to assist and would love to help and learn at the same time for when I haul out my boat. Waffle, What is the name of the dripless packing you use and where do you get it? I just bought my boat in december and am waiting to hear back from the previous owner if he used this stuff, or if I need to inspect and/or replace it. Thanks.

PSS Dimensions

There's a steel ring or doughnut that fits snugly onto the prop shaft, hence the need for shaft diameter, and the rubber baffle tube of the PSS fits around the OUTSIDE of your boats' shaft tube just inside where it exits the boat, so this is reason for them needing the outside dimensions of this. I put one on my C30 last year; so far it works great. Hope this helps.

When you say dripless packing, I assume you are refering to the product made by Gore. While it is not sold as dripless, it is almost virtually dripless. You can go to their website to get more detailed info on it. While I don't have this boat anymore, I installed a PSS Shaft Seal on a Catalina 270 several years ago. Not sure anymore of the dimensions, but the part# was {PSS Shaft Seal 18248}. It was not difficult to change at all. Just need some time & patience.
