I’ll be replacing my 7 year old PSS Shaft Seal when I get hauled out at the end of this season. It doesn’t leak and what I can see of the bellows looks and feels solid. What I have is a salt scale forming on the seal.
I have checked it while motoring and never see or feel any spray but yet the scale is forming.
The only sea water that comes in contact with the seal is from when I remove the Sherwood Strainer filter to clean it out and that gives me less than a 1/4 cup of salt water. That water collects just under the bellows and stays there until the boat heels and tips enough for it to drain through the weep hole.
Tough call but do you think this is what is causing the salt scale to form like I have? Either way it’s coming out of there but it’s unnerving to see the scale and why its forming.
