She is all mine, let the renovations begin! Is there a West Systems dealer in the Toronto, or GTA area?

At the risk of being totally rude, how much did you finally talk the guy down to?

First things first

Going to take the sails out and clean 'em real well. Also taking all items out that are not bolted, glued, fiberglassed, stuck in the boat. Inventory all items. look for cracks in the cabin floor, then repair with glass. Inspect the hatches, put new gaskets on all ports. Inspect the bulkheads and figure out how to get those buggers out, then rebuild from wood or Aluminum. Inspect chain plates, and recock and reseat. Inspect coach and deck for spider cracks, then Dremel out cracks and fill with epoxy, sand. Remove deck hardware, fill screw holes with epoxy, redrill and tap where required and remount all deck hardware. The Keel, peel away glass that is damaged, then reglass. Sails: inspect for damage, replace with new sails as appropriate. Interior: remodel, inspect Head and replace with new unit. That will have all repairs done, as well as remodeling. Time frame, about 6 ~ 9 months, faster if things are easier to do then we are anticipating.

enough

Not rude dude. The asking price was $5K, negotiated to $3.8. I didn't want to steal the boat from them. Yes it is in need of love, and was neglected but it can be repaired, and given the resources at my disposal ( Aluminum fab shop, machine shops, hardware), the cost of the repairs will be minimal. I think what happened is the current owners got into more boat then they were ready for, as with comitments like kids and such, so I didn't want to take advantage, but at the same time be fair. Maybe I could have talked them lower, I doubt it but maybe, that isn't my style. The owners are good people, I'm not going to trash them or their boat or how they took care of it, I'm willing to bet they did what the could with the other pressures of life. Treat the seller with respect and you'll get the same back.

dwayne...

Just so you know, I bought one of my boats for $3500 ( 25') and then put about $6000 into it to make it what I wanted. ( oh, then there is tweeking!) Spend wisely and try not to exceed the value of the boat. r.w.landau

Any of the marine stores

In Toronto carry West Systems products. If you are getting into some serious quantities visit Noahs near Six Points and my favourite- Smithcraft on the Queensway at Islington. Lots of expertise and products.

Aluminum...yup

Sure can, we use different grades of aluminum 1100, 6061 3003. What is a hard dodger? If you have a drawing just send it to me and I'll forward it to Pops (Dad owns the companies, I just work my backside off).

Way to go Dwayne!

Congrats on your new boat. You know, if the rest of the world had your great outlook and respect for other people it would be a much better place. I attach the Grampian website for you - if you go to the links page, you will find all sorts of supplier information that you may need in your renovations. Please keep us posted on the progess, and shout if you cross a problem that you can't find an answer to. Cheers,

A link for a view of one hard dodger

Below is a link to a chap who makes hard dodgers. I don't add it to recommend him as when talking on the phone, he didn't strike me as that professional in terms of business acumen. When I said I never received an answer back to an email I sent him requesting a quote (as recommended on his web page) he replied: "oh I don't answer my email." So I don't list him to recommend him, but I do list it as one example of a hard dodger. Also he uses fiberglass for his dodgers, not aluminum.
