Iam in the process of repowering my catalina 30 ,81 model from a old universal 5411. I realize that I will have to reprop also. In order to do the calculations and compare the various makes of props and 2 vs. 3 blade I am wandering if any one out there can tell me what the largest diameter is acceptable for my boat, leaving the proper 1- to 1 1/2 in. clearance from the hull. jd, Call Steve at Victoria Props in Nanaimo and he will give you all the options. I bought a used Campbell Sailer 3 blade Prop a year ago in Vancouver and had the Nanaimo shop cut it down to 13 inch (max for the Catalina 30) and repitch it. The pitch was not right and for a year I did not get the power/speed I should have out of it. This spring I took it off and called the shop to have it re pitched. They were busy so a one day turn around was out of the question. However Steve told me to bring it to his house in Cobble Hill on Saturday and he would do it in his shop behind the house. Two hours later and $45.00 I was on my way and a totally different performing boat. In my mind that is customer service. Give me a call if you wish here in Victoria. jd, My boat was originally powered by a Yanmar YSE-12 single cyl diesel which died. I replaced it with a Yanmar 2GM (13 hp)as could not find a rebuilt 18 hp. The prop is an older Campbell model and was 14 inch with 10 inch pitch when I purchased it for $125. Victoria Prop said that 13x9 was the perfect match for the engine and boat. After installation the best I could get out of the boat under power was 4 1/2 knts and very poor performance in reverse. I had Steve re pitch it to 11 inch and re cup the blade a bit more which he thought was a little overkill. However the little 13 horse will give me 5 knts at 2500 rpm and 5 1/2 at 2900 rpm. Also backing out of the slip is a lot easier now. I just returned on Sunday from a ten day trip and averaged 3 hours per gallon (US)whilst motoring. Hey jd, you should do what I did. I took 3 Campbell Soup tins (tomatoe), used my tin snips and some 3200 and voila, the perfect prop for $2.59.
