Proper Line Handling

We all know that when handling our sheets and halyards that we are supposed to pull with an over-hand grip. During a few races this past season I was not doing that, I was trimming underhanded for whatever reason, and the conditions were a bit sporty. I just returned from the orthopedic doctor and I get to have 4-6 weeks of physical therapy on my right arm due to Distal Biceps Tendonopothy (tears in the tendon), Lateral Epicondylosis (tennis elbow), and a little bursitis thrown in for good measure. Hopefully the therapy and other treatment will resolve this before I need to have an MRI to see if there is more damage. There is a reason we are told to do things a certain way.

I kind of feel like this right now.....

One saving grace is that the place I am going handles all the major professional sports teams in town too so I am in pretty good hands.

If this was SA, I would post a proper response to you.... ;)
Go ahead. Get banned. Its not that bad.

I guessing all the battle damage in your upper arm?

Uhh huh, sure.....

At the elbow on the inside mainly. Tendon and bursitis is there. Tennis elbow is on the outside.

Yup, old guy (I'm old enough to resemble that). I do about an hour of permanent PT every other day to prevent specific injuries I have a predisposition towards. It really helps.

Other than awkwardness and poor ergonomics, it is also more difficult to get your fingers in the winch overhand. Rather important when it gets "sporty." (I've nearly gotten caught in a winch before, making that mistake. Never again.)

Oh. I thought the standard was based entirely on ego preservation: When standing erect and defiant above the winch, sheets are handled overhand, but when, having lost footing or engaged in other embarrassing maneuver, and thrashing about below the level of the winch, the sheet is handled in any manner likely to reduce the chance of sinking the boat or, if racing, losing speed.

Remember: Getting old really sucks. But it sure beats the alternative!

Pshaw! That bursitis can lead to arthritis so you need to control it with NSAID (Advil works fine). All the rest of that stuff can be blamed on you laying about the house rather than shoveling your roof, splittin' firewood, and snowshoein' over the years! And 'tennis elbow' ? Please.

I have some unknown form of auto-immune screwiness which seems to bother mostly the tendons in my hands and feet. Every so often it migrates up into my elbows or knees. I've found that these 2 simple stretches help A LOT. http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/stretching-exercises-for-tennis-elbow And eating ibuprofen like M&Ms. Prednisone will knock it out in less than 2 days, but who wants to take prednisone?
Good to know.
We've been discussing how to address general fitness and athletic preparation as a team on Kestrel. Up to now its been on a personal, ad-hoc basis. But is clear that the races are very athletic, and people are tired after. We usually lose at least one crew-day to injury each year. We might try and 'suggest' some best practices next year. Hmm...

Those exercises in Brian's link are on my list of personal PT homework to resolve this little issue in the off season.

I know Lori has a seminar at the club as well in the off season on stretching and what not. Thinking we all would benefit from that at WYC. Especially us older guys (gals)....

I've found the palm grip type of winch handle is much easier on my elbow and shoulder. Wax on, Wax off.

So is underhand actually physiologically tougher on the arms than overhand, or were your troubles just because you did something your body wasn't used to? I always used to trim underhand until i was shown how overhand is faster. Now I use overhand for rapid sheeting but I'm still more comfortable underhand for fine trimming. Should I reteach myself before I have trouble?

An overhand (pronated) grip does a much better job of balancing the work done in pulling over all your joints and muscles. An underhand grip focus most of the work on only your bicep. It creates more focused strain and thats bad. Its why they tell you to do pull-ups overhand.

Blunt, what kind of dosage are we talking here? I like the idea of dietary changes, but my problem is modern Western medical pros just don't know what the hell is going on with auto-immune type things. And they don't want us all to "medicate" with hookworm, which seems to moderate all kinds of auto-immune issues, including allergies, asthma, and other things. (Also, if Blunt is your name, I grew up with a kid in Newark, DE, who later moved to NJ whose name was Blunt. Never run into another Blunt again...)

My orthopedic surgeon. told me to try turmeric for arthritis issues. 450mg capsule daily. It's in our corner drug store with supplements.
I don't know if it works, but the pain is gone and then I quit taking it. Pain is still gone.
