Hello. I just bought a 1977 Catalina 27 and was looking for help with the operation of the head. It's a porcelain head so is this original? The guy I bougth it from said that I should to my business and pump a few times with the metal handle pushed back (horizontal) then pull the handle back (verticle) pour in a cupful of fresh water and pump once more. He said that this procedure would keep the salt water out and that the plumbing and bowl would last longer and look better. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's possible, a lot of the older boats used porcelain, and it does last forever. I don't know how hard it is to get parts though, I can't even get a replacement joker valve for the old unit in my 84 model, according to the dealers in such things.
