I'm considering replacing my current three bladed prop on my 1989 Catalina 30 (Universal M25XP diesel) with a Campbell Sailer, or a Perfect Pitch probably with the Extendo mod. Does anyone have experience with these props? What size and pitch did you use? Other comments? Thanks

Campbell

I have a 3 blade Campbell on my C34 with the same engine. Works great. Pushes much better than the Michigan Sailor it replaced. Some prop walk in reverse but not as bad. Don't remember the size. Think it is a 14". Talk with Norm at www.westbynorth.com He got it right the first try.

Campbell

Ken, Did you have to modify your prop shaft to install the Campbell? I'm waiting for a reply from WestbyNorth re size. Thanks

Campell Sailor

I installed a Campell Sailor (3 blades 12 inch Dia 8" Pitch) on my Cat 30 last year when I re engined. The prop walk in noticable but for normal cruising I usually achieve 5.0Kts without thrashing the engine and with no noticable reduction in speed from drag while sailing.

Campbell Prop

The Campbell has the standard taper. Remove the cotter pin, unscrew the nut, remove prop. You will probably need a puller, most of them stick.

Question for Bill

Bill, Given calm conditions, at what RPM do you get 5 kts out of your Campbell Sailor? Thanks in advance, Patrick

campbell sailer cost me plenty

I just purchased a Cambell sailer from Norm at West by North. Here's what happened: I gave Norm all details about boat and performance, including what the factory recomended. Norm said the factory was wrong and that I needed a certain pitch. Before giving the go ahead I asked about what if it was the wrong pitch and he said send it back for repitching. He said don't worry we do lots of your boat. Well it was off by 2-3 inches of pitch. I sent the prop back with all the details and called Norm again telling him what the factory recomended. He ignored the factory choice again, took off only 2 inches of pitch and sent it back. He charged me for repitching and express freight again. I still have the wrong pitch. I can't reach maximum rated rpm I'm out $430 for the prop and over $275 in shipping. Norm also gave me a lame explanation about how the motor wouldn't smoke if I would just throttle back a little. I complained that this was his mistake, his choice of pitch, he ignored the factory specs. Next time I wont be buying from West by North or anyone named Norm in another country. Buy local and made in the USA. Oh yeah, I think the prop is fine, just the wrong one.

Reply for Patrick

Patrick, I have a Sole Mini 17 diesel which is rated at 3,600RPM (with a 2.25:1 reduction gear). I usually run at around 2500/2800 RPM depending on the weather. Hope this helps, if you need anymore info let me know Bill
