Has anyone found a propane locker that can be installed in one of the cockpit lockers on a Catalina 27? The cockpit locker openings appear to be smaller than the smallest dimension of the propane lockers I see in the catalogs. Happy New Yaer to all.

Garry, I asked the same question the other day, too. Another reader responded that the Seaward "self-contained" locker would work. It is about 13" x 13" x 13" overall and has a 4 lb. bottle inside. West Marine carries it in their catalog for about $200 (with a lot of fittings/tank/etc.). Should fit into your rear lazarette if you are an inboard. Take care.

Portable Propane Bottle Storage is Easy!

My 27 (OB in lazarette model) uses a 2 burner LPG stove (no oven) that uses the portable 1 lb. bottles that cost about $3-5 anywhere. I bought some 4" PVC pipe, about 10" long, and glued an end cap on one end. Then, with LONG hose clamps, I clamped it to the rudder post steering tube in the lazarette. There is a drain in the lazarette that goes overboard, so it's effectively vented. Its out of the way, doesn't interfere with the kick-up function of the outboard, easily accessible and can store 2-1 lb. bottles in tandem, which lasts about 2 weeks of cooking breakfast and dinner. I had previously clamped the same PVC setup to a stanchion, which also works, but found it was more in the way.

anchor locker

I keep a bottle attached to the inside hatch of my anchor locker. The locker vents overboard at a low point.

Rod, Peter and Bob, thanks for the suggestions. My '79 Cat 27 inboard has a stern lazarette with an operning of only 11 1/4 inches (I just went out in the snow to measure it). I like the idea of the anchor locker. I am currently using the disposable bottles and keep on in the cubby hole in the cockpit coaming. I also like the idea of the PVC fabrication. Careful on hte PVC

With an IB I'd be sure the PVC pipe thing I suggested gives a way for the propane bottle to vent overboard. (I also forgot to mention that you have to drill a couple holes in the lower end of the PVC pipe to allow it to vent). In an outboard rig, the lazarette is open to the outside thru a 3/4" drain in the transom, as well as the big cutout in the transom in which the outboard sits. Gives plenty of ventilation. Not so sure that would be the case on an IB. Just check it out!! Good luck! Peter Enigma II #1151 Stockton CA

Lazarette

I made a mistake, the Lazarette hatch is 12 1/4 not 11 1/4 inches wide. The little mini locker sold by west marine should just fit in. Thanks again, Garry
