Prop for 310

Has anyone replaced the prop on their 310? Mine is pitted and probably should be replaced or rebuilt. I live in South Florida so the boat is in the water (salt water) all year (sorry those of you on the hard). If you've replaced a prop, did you stay with the standard fixed three blade? What about a two blade, or feathering prop? Any thoughts?

Three blade gives little more "oomph" in chop/headwinds then two
blade but some additional drag under sail. Heard some folks pick
up 1/2 to 1 knot with feathering prop but much more spendy. On
C30 list for thirteen years and did not see any folks removing
feathering in exchange for fixed. Think most racers used feathering.
Different experiences with prop walk three blade vs two blade. My]
experience going from two blade - C30 - to three blade fixed - C310 less
prop walk. Your mileage may vary.

My first concern would by why :confused: an eight year old prop needs replacing due to pitting. You definitely have a corrosion problem which should be addressed before installing a new prop. The big question to ask yourself is "how many zincs are are on the shaft and how long do they last ?"

I changed from a two blade to a three blade prop just to get rid of the vibration problem. I initially thought the prop had fallen off on the first time out as it ran so smoothly. There is a little less prop walk, if that's a concern. And there's definitely more drag but we have limited wind up here and do a lot of motoring if we want to get from A to B.

Yes, the pitting surprised me last time I hauled out (2 years ago). I'm hauling out again next week for bottom painting, so I'll look at it again. Last time, I had two zincs added to the shaft. So that should have kept it from getting worse.

I think I'll stay with the three blade. Prop walk isn't a problem with the slip I pull into (bow first), and I'm not racing the boat, (though an additional 1/2 to 1 knot would be nice, it's not worth the cost).

Just for informational purposes -- how long do those 1" zincs on the prop shaft normally last. I guess some waters are different than others but in general is there an answer to this question?

As far as I can tell from my records, the answer is NO, 'cuz there could be a lot of contributing factors, including electricity in the marina, the condition of the water (run off changes salinity), rainfall, all the usual suspects.

Going back all the way to 1998, I see August to January, August to June, July to January, July to May, etc. It varies year to year and months to months.

Your diver should be checking them for you. If you're a DIY, then check every four to six months.

With the right water, the swim could be fun! :)

Thanks for that info. I am still relatively new in the "big boat" ownership thing. I had a diver back in May and I had zincs. Pulled the boat in December and there were no zincs at all...completely gone.

Now I have 2 zincs following the paint job in December.

Will check them or have them checked more often.

I can only speak for my area which is the cold waters of the Pacific Southwest on the B.C. coast.

I get a full year with three zincs on the shaft. I could probably get away with two but using three is a hold over from the dump I was moored in a number of years ago. There you needed three zincs AT LEAST :eek:.

The outside zinc loses about 30-50% while the middle one is hardly touched and gets several years use.

Typically you should get 6-9 months out of your shaft zincs. Significantly more or less and you have an issue that requires remediation.

Went to the Flex-O-Fold 3 blade a couple of years ago. Light wind speed difference was much better and also lost most of the port prop walk I had with the fixed 3 blade.
