I was not aware that gelcoat even needed UV protection. It seems to be holding up on most boats pretty well for the last several decades. sounds like a gimmick to me.

This is the product that a local marine service listed in a quote that they would apply in doing a deck and hull compounding/rejuvenation job.

MaineSail says to properly wet sand/compound/polish and then wax with Collinite for the best results: http://forums.sbo.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=117266 In this article, he also explains why there are no shortcuts, especially with products that have silicone oils in them.

Once you do this yourself, you'll understand why the yards charge so much. It's long, hard work to do it right.

I know, and I've only done a 19' boat :D:D:D

There are others that SWEAR by Poliglow or Newglass. And even some that use a generic acrylic no-wax floor product. At least Polyglow and Newglass are supposed to be UV stable and not turn yellow.

Just finished a 27 footer and it was white. 8 + honest hours to ready for wax.

My method is a bit different from Maine Sail in two minor respects. First, wet sand 600 if bad, 800 if not so bad, then 1500 3M Trizact with Makita Variable Speed Dual Action electric (as good as any air Dual Action.)

Once sanded overall to 1500 minimum (3000 even better) then Menzerna Power Gloss on a white wool pad followed with Sure Finish (on a yellow or black foam pad - Sure Finish is at Autobodystore.com.)

Sanding 1500 (and 3000 to follow or if things just barely need scuffing) before getting to compound/polish cuts the job time down because wet sanding 1500 Trizact then 3000 is far less work than a rotary buff.

I think Menzerna and Sure Finish is better and faster than Presta or 3M.

By the way this is for a full on pretty finish on a white boat - dark colors (blues-blacks) are going to take more time.

Catalina 30 ...so perhaps $1550 (tax included) is normal?

I don't know, could be a deal on a boat this size, given the number of man-hours that might be involved. If it took 8 hours just to prep a 27' boat as was mentioned earlier, this might be very reasonable. Guess that's why I'm asking, so I can get a feel for the cost to out-source a job like this.

Assuming you don't have to buy the buffer, DA orbital, cutting and polishing pads, compounds and waxes for 4-500, you would easily spend 20 plus hours cleaning and polishing a 30. My 31 took at least that. So do the math. What's your billing rate per hour assuming owner provided tools and expendable supplies. Then decide if you will work for that or hire the pro who will have the tools and supplies.

If I could have gotten my 31 done for 1,500, I'd have jumped on it.
