I am considering buying a '76 Catalina 27. Are there any known problems with this particular year model? Any information will be helpful.

Great boat

I owned a '76 Catalina 27 several seasons ago and she was a great little boat. Atomic 4 inboard gas engine started right up every time and ran like a top. She was a very competent sailor and we had excellent luck with her before moving up to a Catalina 30. Just watch for the standard things on boats of this age - corroded keel bolts, rigging integrity, bad through hull valves, leaking chain plates, leaking ports, deck moisture and leaks around stantions, etc. Check out the Catalina 27 Association website for an article on what problems to look for in older 27s. A good 27 of this age has the added advantage of very little depreciation. We sold her for just $500 less than we paid for her.

Catalina 27 problems?

Appreciate your reply. I currently own a shoal draft (2'10") Lancer 28. I just like everything about the Catalina better. For a foot shorter boat, it seems to have a lot more room than the Lancer. Better layout in the cabin and on deck. Thanks, Alan

c-27 problems

the c-27 is great weekender. i've had 2 of them over the years. they sail well, turn on a dime, and are comfortable for a crew of 2 or a small family. older ones have some problems - keel bolts, chainplates, etc, but nothing that can't be fixed. too bad you're not closer good luck.

Yes, one major problem,

.............there's not enough hours in a day to be "completely satisfied" sailing them. (but keep trying) Mike
