Problem with Single Line Reefing

I have a problem with my single line reefing system. When I try to raise the main the reefing system seems to get jammed and I must pull out several feet of the reefing line before the sail will go all the way up.I had the main off 1 year but never removed the line from the boom or the blocks.Anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Reefing line

I have the 310 and have the same problem. I have just gotten in the habit of making sure the line is slack when I raise the main.

Let the lines Droop

George, As John suggested it sounds like you may have taken up the slack when the sail was down maybe to neaten up the mess the drooping lines make. If your reefing line is run correctly, which it problably is, you have a choice of dealing with the drooping lines when the sail is down or dealing with the friction of them running through the many less than fair leads while raising the sail if you take up the slack when the sail is down.Stan"Christy Leigh"c320 #656

Tuck the lines in

When you lower your sail, the reefing lines will droop. Tuck the mess into the folds of the mainsail when it's flaked on the boom. When you raise the sail the next time, your reefing line won't give you a problem in raising the main.Roc

I agree with the two prior posts. No reason to pull these lines in when lowering the main. Tuck them into the sail when flaking over the boom.

Reefing

I like to tuck the reefing line into a bungee, which I loosely strap around the main to keep the flakes in order. I learned this by doing the exact same thing you did!Enjoy -Rob
