Pulled every hose and ran water through them via the raw water pump since were on a mooring. The vane piece was the tip of one vane, water runs freely with volume when not connected to the HX. Tomorrow sees a gallon of "On & Off" get sucked into the Hx to super clean that and the muffler.

Some pics of NYC included.

Today I started off by pulling the impeller out (nothing wrong with it) and replacing it. Ran fine here on the mooring. Flushed "On & Off" into the Hx to rid any residue buildup (Hx new in 2013). After two hours flushed out the system and it ran fine. I'll wait for my next "Boat (not bowel) Movement".

Did it take a gasket or O-Ring seal on the cover plate?
I also hope that came with the replacement impeller.

I'm cautiously optimistic as we moved yesterday from NYC to Old Lyme, Ct. We started the generator and it ran fine, no need to prime. So impeller change, (throw away the one that looked good) and flush out the Hx.
Moving again Wed. or Thur. and will only reply if we still have an issue.:shhh:

Great News! If we didn't help, at least we were humous and gave moral support, and maybe got @woodster to take a shower more often.

It doesn't take long to lose an impeller if it runs dry. Last note, I learned...

The cover plate seal against the impeller, especially with O-Ring seal, is very sensitive. I now tighten mine like a spare tire, in a star pattern. The O-Ring keep the water inside the pump, but the plate, itself, seals against the impeller (thats is why the plate wears as silt polishes it).
Jim...

PS: I am still waiting for my shipment of Bahamian Water Spiders for LA jumbo shrimp. BTW we sailed pasted about 8 Rays , sunning themselves, about 2 feet from surface, 4 sea turtles, and 30+ dolphins yesterday.

Worked well 4 different moves, chalk it up to a new impeller that had some sort of flaw and replaced by the old one that I had taken out just because we were leaving for the trip.

Our Onan 8kw Genset, including the sea water screen, is above the waterline and does not have a vented loop. No reason to have one that I can think of. The only time it has had a prime problem is when after cleaning the screen I failed to set the lid properly and air leaked through preventing the sea water pump from bringing in cooling water.

The Genset is set up for remote operation, so if it's sensors detect high exhaust temp, low oil pressure, or high coolant temp, it will trip an ignition breaker and shut itself off; a nice safety feature. Hunter did a good job with this system selection.

Normally I run the Genset for two hours every other day to heat water for washing, cooking and topping off the house bank. One time the screen became plugged with sea weed from a very dirty harbor even though I had cleaned the screen a few days before. During my trouble shooting I found the impeller was also due for change so after that little episode she ran just fine.

My pump body was eroded from operation in silt and would not prime. Erosion was at the end face opposite from the cover plate. I fixed it by remachining the pump body, and it has been fine since.

If your exhaust manifold is above the waterline and your sea water pump impeller is good, you are right.

If your impeller vanes are broke off, you can get a siphon flowing through the open engine valve, when engine is stopped (very unlikely but possible and a good reason to shut the sea cock on high temp shutdown).

For those of us, whose water pump/exhaust are below water line, we need a high point (being above the water line) siphon break. I am guessing that most standard genset are designed with that as an option for the variety of installations.:)
Jim...

PS: Shutting the sea cock off will stop any siphon and then you can reopen it immediately without siphon fears.
