Price increase at my Marina

I've been at the California Yacht Marina for three years now. I am very satisfied with their services and staff. Unfortunately, they are the last marina in San Diego Bay and being such may be the cause for a lot of empty slips. I think that has a lot to do with the fact that my slip fee went up. From $294/mo to $305.20/mo for my 26' slip.Wish the marina would fill up those empty slips so the cost would stay down.Just saying.

It's the fuel prices...

At least that's the excuse I get from anyone I complain to about soaring prices! At first glance, I don't know how feul prices affect a marina much, particularly since they SELL the fuel at the absolute highest prices, but I'm sure someone smarter than me will justify it with 20 reasons!Sorry for your luck. $11/mo increase - consider yourself very lucky

BrianIt's all about supply and demand.Here in RI, when our rates go up, it's usually in increments of $10/ft although demand is apparently down so no increase this year as there are lots of emply slips for the first time in years. I'm sure someone will figure out how to relate this to the price of fuel although it's still much cheaper here than in CA.

Price is worse in Chicago

and they charge you more (20 or 25%)if you don't actually live in Chicago. We also have poor, make that very poor facilities. How does 3 showers, 1 urinal, and 2 toilets sound for all males boaters. We have about 1000 boats on this side of my marina. And of course they are not open all the time. This is Chicago politicians hard at work. I'll bet this marina takes in $4 mil in fees. You would think they could put some back into this place? I like to sail to Michigan and Wisconsin. Bathrooms are open 24 hours there. We have a nice skyline to be sure but it is not worth the price. I am thinking with the high price of fuel that some power boaters may decide to get out of boating. Slips may be easier to get. (There is a waiting list now) Eventually Chicago may have to change their tune and be more attentative to the customer.

It doesn't make any sense to me? How is your marina the last one? There are NO OTHER marinas in your area, or is it way out of the way?

CYM Chula Vista is the furthest south of all the marinas in San Diego Bay. I would also venture to say it is the last marina in the US on the California coast but don't hold me to that. San Diego Bay has lots of marinas. Most are in the Bay entrance, or close to it. I.e. Harbor Island, Shelter Island, and others. And these are priced way too high for me.

Goes up every year in Dana Point, the

annual notice of the increase is the first sure sign of spring. A 25' slip is now $347/month into which will fit a boat up to 28' overall ( a Cat 27 or Dana 24).

Feel Your Pain

Brian, I'm at the Redondo Beach location run by the same company. I got my letter last week. I look at it as the first sign of summer, as we get one every year. But all-in-all, with everything climbing up, it was not too bad. Diesel at the local fuel dock is up to $5.10!And I have seen your marina; it is the last marina on the western side of the U.S. At least if you are heading south!

guess I need to quit gripping about my slip fees. Its $150 a month for my 30 Pearson, power and water included along with a clean rest room that is open 24/7. Only 16 slips and everyone knows everyone.Frank

The other thing that I noticed

is that all marinas are starting to charge for EVERY little service. It is getting to be a pain in the butt. I had talked to the marina owner at mine to see if I could put my dingy somewhere there and he replied that he was thinking about making a dingy rack but he would have to charge $10 a month for dingy storage. I already pay descent money for a slip in my area without adding 120 a year for dingy storage. For that price I will keep lugging mine around just because of principle. Everyone is money hungry anymore. For services that use to be done just to keep customers happy they now want to charge for it. It is ridiculous!

Brian:I do not see anything else getting cheaper. The wages go up, the health care goes up, the price of utilities goes up......If they fill your maina it will go up faster because the demand is up.California Delta is anywhere from about $4.50 - 8.00/ft. We are paying 6.15/ft with electricity included.

Good thing you guys don't live in Phoenix. At the largest lake near Phoenix, I pay $460 per month for a 30' slip. They go for $1300 per month plus electricity for a 60' covered!!!!

Mark, as bad as I am, I would golf!

I would spend most of my time golfing near the water hazards.Just a note: I paid about $450 for a mooring from April 15th to October 31st. Yes that was $450 for six months not $450 a month.It's small but I can sail my O'Day 25 all wwekend and not cover the same ground...the veiw is typical, but I can sail with people of find a quite place.I would happily rent you my mooring for say $250/month. , on second thought never mind I have it pretty good, as small as it is!r.w.landau

Wasn't a complaint. I like CYMCV. It is a great marina. If I lived and worked in South San Diego, I would have upgraded to a larger boat and kept it there. But alas, I do not.Yep, some of you guys have if worst than me. And I agree, everything is going up. I blame it on corn!

I assume your montky fees are x 12 months. Makes ours seem fairly reasonable at $3000 / year or 250 per month for 33ft. We're about average for this area, some cheaper some more. Top end is around $ 4000, lower end $2500. We were 99% full last year. They are in the midst of constructiong townhouse condo's adjacent to the marina with guarenteed access to slips for the buyers, that should fill it up to 100% or more as the development fills up.

I guess my slip was a bargain

I bought a 40' boat in San Diego last year and had the broker move it to a slip he got for me behind his office. It cost me $800 for 2 months. There was nothing else available on Shelter Island. The wharf rats wouldn't give me the combo to the shower. Otherwise it was a great place to vacation. My boat is now in windier climes.

Tell me more about the joys of living in California

I am still paying less than two thousand per year slipfees ,winter storage, haulout and pressure wash and spring launch. No electricity at the slip. But we have an outlet at the bulkhead and I have 300 feet of number 12 extension cord for when I need it. You learn to plan more carefully.

Ross;The water never gets hard in California. You pay $2000 for 7 months of sailing and we pay $2700 (that includes power too) for 12 months. ..... and Hawaii is only 2400 miles away by boat!

Where I am in New England my fee went up to $126/ft for a six month season! Too much demand here!
