Can the pressurized alcohol stove, original equipment, in my 81 37 Hunter C be converted to LPG by simply replacing the alcohol canister with LPG ? If more is required, can anyone provide conversion details and instructions? Thanks.

By complying with the three criteria

you will have built a propane stove in the old case. You will replace all of the functional components of the alcohol stove with the functional parts of a propane stove. Look closely at a propane camp stove for the manner with which all of the pieces are arranged.

Careful

The way your current stove is put together may be ok for an alcohol stove, but might result in leaks if the fuel is changed. Compression=type joins may have been used, for example, where soldering might be called for in an LPG stove. You may want to take it to a dealer to have it checked out thoroughly before possibly turning your boat into an expensive weenie roast.

Flare fittings

are called for on all gas appliances. The compression fittings can and do leak and can not be trusted in gas fitting. Soldering is rarely needed. I was assuming a skill level adequate for the job. This certainly is not a project for learning a new craft. Beyond that if a person is competent in assembling this sort of modification there is no reason to avoid doing it. I presume that the change in fuels without changing the entire appliance is an effort to avoid the need to remodel the galley.

Stove only a part of LPG system

The stove is only a part of a properly installed LPG system. Most people find the difficult part of this conversion is where to put the LPG locker. The LPG tank MUST be in a dedicated locker that has an overboard vent and is air and vaopr tight to the vessel interior. Also the locker MUST open directly to outside air, not inside another locker. All lines should be either copper tubing with UL approved flexible connecters at the stove and the locker or UL approved flexible line.An electric shutoff and a leak detector are highly recommended. As for the stove, conversion is possible but all the internal components must be changed, burners, valves and lines. LPG is a great fuel but since it is a heavier than air gas, extreme caution must be used. That being said, I converted my own 37C to LPG and it worked out great. Dan Sheehan AMS Do it right or not at all LPG is dangerous if not done properly

One more thing

Ross is right as well You also must have a LPG pressure regulator and leak check gauge which MUST be installed in the LPG locker. Dan Sheehan AMS

check out Cabela's

I found this new gas stove and oven at Cabela's for $149.99. It uses one Lb. disposable cans of propane fuel. best of all it is about 19.5" wide so it fit in the opening for my old stove (catalina 30). I used the gimbals from the old stove. It took about two hours of cussing and its in. Take a hard look at this because you can just unscrew the tank and store it someplace safe when you are not using the stove. look for the outback gourmet camp stove
