Justin,
You could follow the Pioneer spirit and visit a local farmer. Share that you want to help by harvesting a local deer that must be feeding on his crops. Then like the indigenous tribal elders you hang, skin, and cure the deer hide. Using tools passed down through the ages, you scrape the hide and work it with oils till it is supple and of the proper length. Carefully along the edges you punch small holes evenly spaced. All this should occupy your winter enforced in door lifestyle. Fortunately not in a tent. Then come spring you’ll be ready to grab the helm and tie on your new lifetime covering. There will be great stories to share about the hunt and preparation. But the “pièce de résistance” will be that you saved $300.

Much as I like to support local ranchers and farmers, and appreciate what goes into producing a nice helm cover, I don't see a $300 value in it for me. YMMV. I really like the cord wrapped look and it lends a nautical touch to the helm. Plus I will be able to appreciate the work I put into it.
