Power surge at a mooring

Folks, I just got my first Catalina C27, which by the way is also my first boat, and as one would expect I'm loaded with questions. But the one that strikes me the most is this: When keeping the boat at a buoy how do I keep my batteries charged enough to give me the surge I need to crank the motor?

Good Question

You will need to find an alternate energy source. Your primary options are wind generators and solar panels. Either one of these will help charge your batteries in the absence of shore power. Your environment will dictate which type will help you more. You can search the archives of this forum and find tons of information on this topic. Good Luck! Best Regards, Rob

Inboard?

Marcelo, If your boat is an inboard like my C27, I found that the time spent motoring from mooring out to sailing area and back was sufficient to keep batteries charged. By the way, as a new C27 owner and sailor, I also recommend you check this bulletin board. Fewer folks, but all C27'ers. Roger C27 &Mabel, Cape Cod

A Combo Idea

How about using a solar panel to keep the battery charged as much as possible plus use one of those portable "jump start" battery packs that you would have charged up at home? I see them in the ads for less than $50. I'm not sure they'd be strong enough to crank a Diesel with dead batteries, but if your batteries were a little weak, the battery pack should add enough juice to start your engine. Also, I'd make sure that at least one of your batteries were completely disconnected from everything when you leave the boat so that a low level leak doesn't drain it.

Try a solar panel

We kept a boat on a mooring for 4 years and only had one time that i can remember where the batts were dead, So i got a solar panel and layed it on the seat out of the sight of passersbys this did the trick and even brought back the old batt. the last thing i do now is make sure the SP is attached. Also make sure you have a diode in the line. the 1n1004 i think
