I am re-doing a 77' H25. The current project is repainting the deck. In an effort to do a good job I tired to remove the portlights in order to reseal and get a nicer paint job. Well, as the saying goes "no good deed goes unpunnished" I chipped two of the exterior rings - 2 lights now have a 2-3" "chip" missing on the exterior ring. The bad part is I am BROKE and between jobs and my wife is ready to freeze my account and....bla bla bla. I CAN NOT afford new matching windows - there are 6 total - at a conservative $100 each I'm looking at $600 - nope! I read a post in the archives about a user who cut new super tough tinted "plexiglass" larger than the opening and affixed the windows to the exterior of the cabin - he said it looks great - I figure I could somehow snazz-up the inside area where the core would be visable - and I do have the inner rings which are in good shape which may cover this area. Any opinions on doing this or repairing the chipped outer rings? Thanks!!

portlight trim rings

You can find the trim rings for around $16 each if you shop the internet, and that might be a cheap way to make it look good again. That is IF you are talking about opening ports, undamaged. If it is just the exterior, that would work.

non-opening lights

I should have stated they are non-opening portlights - plastic construction.

deeman...

I did that on a former 21' Starwind sailboat. Replacement was out of the question ($$), so we cut plexi/lexan bigger than the opening, and screwed it in. I used some mobile home/RV type putty that came in a tape form, about 1/2 - 1" wide, between the plexi and cabin top. Looked fine and never leaked.
