Who have boats and have had for years, who do not have enough confidence to do an overnight offshore hop without someone else they trust aboard.
Not to be at all rude, but what's the problem being offshore at night with all the modern goodies available today like GPS if one is a proficient sailor?
Off shore there should be no rocks and highly traveled areas would be just as difficult to navigate in daylight as in the dark. A lot of times I prefer the dark sailing as it's cooler, there isn't any glare from the sun, boats are lit and their direction more discernible than on a hazy day and there are fewer small craft puttering about. If one gets to the other end before dawn, one can just take down the sails and drift until they can see. Just asking.

Now that is ME! I would ten times rather move a boat at night. I think that it's just that ingrained "fear of the dark" or something.

Wind Pimp! That's funny!

The reason I am wondering about the size of the sailing population is because a friend and I noticed that there seems to be much more training resources available to airplane pilots than there are to sailing. I thought that was odd, assuming that that there are many more sailors than pilots. There are over 600,000 certificated pilots in the US. Now, I'm not so sure my assumption that there is an overwhelming bigger population of sailors is true.

My pappy was an accomplished pilot with many hours by the time he was 15, his grandson couldn't get his pilot's license until he was 16 and had passed numerous tests and quals. His grandson is also an accomplished sailor, but there is no license to sail. I think it has something to do with two vessels, one capable of hitting your house at 200 mph, and the other capable of dragging anchor and scratching your topsides.

It's easier to leave the dock without instruction than to leave the ground.
That is just plain funny in so many ways....:D

Reminded me of a joke...

If at first you don't succeed....... then maybe skydiving is not for you.

U.S. sailor population

Boy,

This thread went off on some tangents.
It started out asking the number of sailors & now we're at nighttime & offshore sailing.

By my last count, I thought we were up to 8.5 U.S. sailors counting one child.

But, to keep the tangents going, I also like nite/offshore sailing.
But what I do enjoy immensely is sailing in daytime sea fog. Now that's cool.............
