Plexiglass protector in the galley

I know I have seen pictures of this, but can't find any now that I am looking. Friends with newer or bigger boats than the Catalina 30s sometimes have a nice sheet of Plexiglas mounted right behind the galley sink/s to either divide the galley from the rest of the cabin or protect the wood right there by the faucet... that is what I'd like to do. I know we could have a piece cut and and do that ourselves but I wondered if anyone knows of this being mfg by anyone already. Seems no matter how much I oil that strip of wood there, it gets wet and just does not look as good as the rest. I don't want to varnish our interior wood, I love it oiled instead. Gracias for any ideas!

Hunter 36

I have a nice piece of plastic along the back edge of our galley sink keeping water from splashing on to the seat cushions and the cabinets.
Most guys get a piece of plastic made or they get the plexieglass and do their own setup,I lucked out that Hunter make these really nice plexiglass with nice hard ware also for their bigger boats and the Hunter 38 one was a good fit for my boat.
i can't seem to find any photo of mine but i got it from Hunter parts department and it was not cheap but looks so good.
Is it a straight piece and can you post the size or photo of your galley you are looking for.

thank you Nick, I will check out Hunter's site for this. I would be ok with it being rather long, it would only serve to protect anyway and I think it adds a really nice look. As you say, the hardware looks good so if it extended past the sink and toward the counter a ways it would be ok. I don't have any interior shots of our space but it is very much as all of the Catalina 30 galleys look.... maybe 4 ft. from port side to the end of the counter toward the starboard. I will see what I can find and report back. I did find a thread about someone else looking for the same thing, here at SBO from around 2006.

You might also want to check with Catalina's parts department - the 309 has a thick, smoked plexiglas separator on the back edge of the counter with the sink, and would probably fit the C30 as well, since the layout and dimensions in the cabin are pretty similar. You can probably see a picture on Catalina Yacht's web site if you look at the section on the 309.

JIMM on this forum has a C30 and did that. I did some work on my B323, but went to the local plastics fabricator and he found a scrap piece in a nice aqua tint- and a reasonable price.

Thanks Ron, I looked JIMM up and saw pictures of what he did. Very nice but much more than I would like to do. I want to put a piece that is maybe 3/4 in thick, 4-6 inches high and maybe 2 ft long. I will keep looking at New boat Mfg. and see if I can find it there as I have seen this on new boats.

I would contact Hunter Marine and see if they have the brackets or can tell you where to get them. Most any plastic shop can just out the acrylic and radius the edge.

3/4 inches thick? Sounds like you want a basketball backboard. Someone in the newspaper was giving one away, and I thought about snapping it up- but didn't. Look here for brackets and other stuff:

If your going to bend it, keep in mind that acrylic requires heat to bend, polycarbonate (hockey dashers) can be brake formed in a metal shop in six seconds. Also, 3/4" is massive! My company works with 1/2 million or so sf of plastic glazing a year and I've never seen it that thick. I'll bet that if you found one that your really liked the look of, it would be 1/4" thick.

Bent it myself, was pretty easy. I laid 2x4's on the plex with a slot between them exposing only the bend strip then slowly heated the area with a heat gun. It's important to bring up the temp slowly and only enough to get it to flex because any more and you risk bubble formation in the plastic. Once flexible I supported the piece at the proper angle and let it cool. Simple as that.

It's difficult to see in the picture but I made a 4" long U-bracket to support the outboard end from 1/4" aluminum channel available at Lowe's. After a quick pass on the polishing wheel I screwed it to the galley cabinet face.

Great looking

Some great examples been given here Steve Dion's are what the Hunter's have and think his photo must be a 41 Hunter,mine came from a Hunter 38 and is the full lent of my counter top with the brackets hunter sent me,Hunter has always been very helpful in the service and parts department they even call back if you leave a message,I will be going to my boat in a few minutes and will take some photo's.

Neil, you are so talented! This is almost exactly what I want to do, maybe just a little shorter. I see that 3/4" is a little thick, I don't know distance or thicknesses, I always get those wrong! 1/4 inch looks right now that I see that. I have looked at everything mentioned here and had a hard time finding anything, so this a a great start. The brackets listed in a later post look right too. Thanks for all the help....

Thank you Jimm, that is a gorgeous job you did,and I am happy to say that I did research you when I was given your name and found it myself. Very nice! It is bigger than I had in mind, I just want to have it rise a little above the wood back of the settee, but I am encouraged by so many now that I am finding. Thanks so much!

Perfect!, Thanks Steve, this is what I was actually looking for, our friends have one on their Jeanneau and I love it. Very very similar to what you show here. I have looked at the hunter site for parts with no luck but I will calll them, Thanks, I think I have what we need now to get this done, Thanks everyone!:dance:
